Got this coin along with about 50 others as a part of a set. All other coins have been check and verified as authentic but this one sets off my fake-ometer because it has a strange grove along the entire rim. Also others I have seen have sharper details especially in the ship in the background. Does anyone know the specifics of this coin so I can check it out.

Krause lists it as KM# T5, 26.9568g, 0.900 silver.
OBV - Britannia standing
REV - Oriental design on a cross; denomination is incorporated on the reverse in Chinese and Malay.

The 1930 issue was stuck in London.

This is my example with so much more detail that it makes me believe yours is a cast replica. I don't know if mine is genuine but she is certainly much crisper that the 1930 posted.

Thank you for replying, I weighed it on my cheap kitchen scale it weighs 26-27g and is non-magnetic but it is the rim that looks fishy to me almost looks as though two coins have been stuck together.

I forgot to add that it has that perfect silver ring to it not a dull sound most cast fakes have....I'm stumped.

Your coin is a great example, much more clear details. I have about 10 Chinese fakes that I got from my friends aunt (didn't know they were fakes at the time) but I use them as examples of what to watch out for the somewhat hazy details on this coin were an immediate flag.

Fake or Real? Opinions? I will wait on a consensus.

Thanks to any who reply

I would have said it's fake based on its appearance.
Maybe it's real and it has just been buried in sand or something.

The circumferential line on the rim is really odd. Could it be a container? Can it be pried apart or unscrewed?

nope it doesn't come apart, that would be interesting if it did though. I think I'm going to have it looked at by a pro

Just an update on this coin it weighs 26.46g which is off from the book stated weight but I think that could have been lost from the grove on the edge and wear on the obverse.

Because I thought it could be fake I did a light silver scratch test on a test stone(no visible damage to coin) and it tested positive as silver.

So long story short I am completely stumped. I really don't want to send a fake coin, if it is fake to a TPG.

Aye the detail on yours absolutely screams counterfeit to me as a Trade dollar wouldn't wear like that. If it's silver, it could be a contemp., but I haven't seen contemporary counterfeits of British Trade dollars so I'm not sure what to look out for.

I believe this coin has been mounted in a bowl or ash tray. Heavily polished at one time and on the "easy" side. It was then removed at some point.

Just opinion....

John, your coin is fake to me. Muddler, your coin is much better. The Trade dollar of this type bears a very accurate weight. Check the weight of your coin and it will give your the hint.
