Many Bust Halves have been posted on the forum and it's obvious a lot of people like these, so I thought I'd share my nicest "bustie." This is the 1818 "Pincer 8" variety (Overton O-108, I think). This variety seems very common in circulated grades but I read in Breen's encyclopedia that it is "extremely rare" in mint state. Can our bust half collectors comment as to how scarce this coin is? This one is graded MS-63 by PCGS. Are there Condition Census ratings for the Overton varieties?

Jaobler, that is a very sweet coin. My pincer 8's is a common VF with weakly struck left wing detail. The stellar luster of that coin is only enhanced by its razor-sharp details. If I ever saw that coin in person I would hope I brought a change of pants.

I'm not sure of the best place to get the most up to date condition census ratings (because that's never been an issue for me.) At 63 you've cracked the top 5 in the latest Overton book, which lists 65, 64, 63, 60, 60 as the top 5 condition census. I also can't figure out how that coin is only a 63 unless there's more chatter than can be seen through the slab. I'm usually very conservative and I would call it a solid 64.

Consensus price guide prices for a common 1818 in MS-63 look like they're in the $3K range, but I that would be an absolute lowball figure. If I were writing the auction guide I would probably say around $4500-6500 at least. I mean it looks like it was the first coin struck!

I'm interested to see what everyone else thinks.

Thanks for posting that beauty!

PS Can you post another pic (or email me one) of the whole slab? Thanks--Mark

I can't really answer your question because I'm quite new to the Bust Half game, but that one is stunning !!!

That is just one fantastic looking coin. There are quite a few folks that never even look in this thread. Might I suggest that you post this in the coin grading section without revealing the grade right away. Of course I haven't gotten that far yet, so it may already be there....

Sure Mark, here's the slab. The MS-63 grade always seemed fair to me. Maybe it could have graded higher if it didn't have that blotchy obverse toning. A nice target tone pattern with some color might have earned an extra point.
Glad I'm not the only one that likes this coin!

Thanks for the pic--it's just beautiful. I suppose you are right about the grade being fair as far as numbers go.

But it's the coin and not the holder we're interested in, right?

I know you weren't exactly asking for estimates of value rather estimates of scarcity, however, the two go hand-in-hand, don't they? The Eliasberg pincer 8's in MS-65 (NGC) sold for just over $6600 two years ago. The last non-1818/7 MS-63 1818 Bust Half in Heritage's records was an ICG MS-63, which sold for $3335. The "pincer 8's" variety was not included in the astoundingly large Queller collection sale by Stack's in 2002. Maybe I was a little high on my high end, but I wouldn't insure it for less than $6000, because where are you going to find a replacement? Unless someone else has better information, yours is tied for 3rd finest known. I'd say that makes it pretty special. The fact that it made me spend half-an-hour looking all this stuff up should tell you something as well...
