I've been told this by others on this forum:

There is no such thing as extra metal. A planchet is a planchet is a planchet. The build up of metal comes from a die chip. A piece of the die chips off and when the coin is stamped the metal from the planchet is forced into all open spaces in the die. One of those open spaces is a die chip. No added metal, just a changed appearance.

I would keep it as well. I have a really cool 197x penny where the metal has been moved around so I am not sure what the last digit is. I know its post mint damage (maybe post strike damage) but I like it!

I value it at $.01

Alan Herbert in his Official Guide to Mint Errors describes coins struck through unstruck planchet fragments (p258). Coins can be struck through unretained laminations coming from other planchets. These can be retained which I believe is what caused the extra metal on eddio's coin. Herbert starts value at $1.
