I now have one each of the 1855 LC's! I see XF40 for this one, only the L in Liberty has been worn down. If it were VF35 I would expect to see more wear on the rim with flush denticles and less hair and liberty detail. I also believe at VF35 you would almost not be able to discern the knob on the ear. You can still see it here. What does everyone else think?

I'm good with XF40 too, a couple noticeable contact marks would keep it away from 45 or higher. Nice brown!

I am thinking that might be considered an early stage of the "knob on ear". My piece is a little further down on the life cycle of the dies, and someone here in the CCF has an ever later die state. Here is mine for comparison (not trying to thread-jack);

Looks like a nice piece and I could go along with the XF40+ grade as well based upon the separation of the rim to denticles and light wear on the highest points of hair and leaves.

I was just about to ask about the die state. This does appear to be an earlier one in the knob progression as it hasn't quite attached itself to the ear yet in this state, nor is it as prominent as in oih28w8's.

This series is fast becoming my favorite to collect.

It appears the OP's "knob" is just starting to form.

My 1855 "knobbie" looks more like oih82w8's and must be a LDS.

(Also not to hijack the thread, but for comparison to the OP's posted coin and oih82w8's...)
