Hi All, I have a question that arose when I checked out the US Mint website a few days ago. What is the difference between an ASE Collectors coin and the ASE Bullion Coin? Also to get the silver bullion version I need to go through a company not the US mint? Any recommendations? Thank you. John Edited by SilverTracker 02/05/2013 4:17 pm

The burnished W mint marked coin from the Mint has a much lower mintage (400-500k vs. 40 million) than its bullion brother. Same amount of silver, different finish, package and an added mint mark...made for collectors vs. bullion investors ..also ...saw your edit after I posted...yes, bullion ASE's can be bought from many dealers and ebay...your choice

The mint does not sell bullion coins. Bullion coins are sold only through authorized dealers. Collector coins are proof coins, burnished or uncirculated. These coins are sold at a premium over spot.
The silver content is the same in all silver eagles

The bullion version is intended to be a silver investment vehicle and is only sold through the Authorized Purchaser dealer network. The bullion version has mintages in the millions and the physical specs are the same as the collector versions. The collector versions come in two flavors- Proof and Uncirculated(burnished finish) and both are available directly from the US Mint. The Proof version has polished fields and frosted devices while the Uncirculated version is similar to the bullion version but it has a burnished finish and will carry the W mintmark. Both collector versions have mintages in the hundreds of thousands.

Thank you for the explanations. I was concerned about this because if ever I had to sell.it I wanted the best grade of silver. Why have a bullion version and a collectors version then if silver content is the same. I will most likely will go uncirculated collector version. I just love the design. With this economy the way it is I wanted to have some kind of precious metal in house so I guess this the way to go for now.

@John Hutch The uncirculated collector version of the ASE's (with the mint marks) have only been in production since 2006 that would limit you to a smaller number of coins. The proofs have been out since 1986 and with the exception of 2009 have been issued every year. The bullion coins are fine too and have one each year since 1986. The mint (usually) only has the current year available so any prior year will need to be purchased from another source.

The silver content of the numismatic and bullion versions is the same. They are both struck on the same blank. If you are after silver as an investment, then just get the bullion coins. They are cheaper and can be purchased at any coin shop or online. The numismatic versions of the coin differ from the bullion coin because have mint marks and different surface finishes such as proof, rev. proof, or burnished. Really you can't go wrong buying either one, just decide what your needs are.

you know guys , I was looking closley at my 2006 w vs 2006 bullion and then examined the 2012 same 2 coins. It sure is hard to tell the difference between the 2 struck in 2012, they look identical

I agree, I really cannot see a significant difference from the BU and the "burnished" coins except for the mint mark. There are two "burnished coins in 2011 the "W" and an "S"

For every ten people that think the quality has improved, there are at least five that think quality control at the mint still stinks. I happen to think the quality of the bullion ASE'S has greatly improve at the mint.

I agree the bullion coins look fantastic now. If they slapped a W on them and did nothing else different youd be hard pressed to separate them from the uncirc versions
