A guy on Craigslist has a bunch of 1996 American Silver Eagles for sale. I am thinking about buying one because I know they are the smallest mintage year and I don't have one yet.
My question is: is one enough? I am thinking about maybe 3 - 5 of them. He says he has a tube and would pick the best ones available.
I know their mintage is low but it doesn't really look like they're pulling a big premium right now.
Does anyone think the value will/should go up for these or should I just get one and if I want more, buy a 1997, 1998, 1999, etc.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

how much ? , number 1. Allways get one to keep and at least one to sell. These things have consistantly sold for 80 to 100 bucks in ms69 on ebay. With the advent of all the other types of eagles being made it is still lowest of the bullion type minted. I think they will eventually go up on melt value alone. I own 3 in NGC ms 69. see ya bro

My opinion? There were over 3.6 million minted less than 17 years ago. Several other years were in the 4 million range, barely more on a relative scale. I see very little premium that will ever be associated with a modern bullion coin with numbers like that. I would buy whatever years I could find at the lowest premium. This is regarding raw coins. When it comes to graded ASE at 69 and 70? Insanity soon sets in with buyers.

Price will definitely matter and the 96 will probably always have some premium but that premium seems to be eroding some with how many of the other eagles are coming in way lower in terms of mintage now like the special sets.
If they have a good price on them like 40-50 Id go with the 96 but I wouldnt buy them full retail expecting them to go up. Theyve probably maxed out their premium unless you plan to wait 30 or 40 years.

I got an email blast from one of the online coin houses I deal with. Over the last few months they have morphed into the Home Shopping Network. " This could be your last chance to own one of these exceedingly hard to find coins. These coins are disappearing fast into the hands of collectors. The lowest mintage of any business strike ASE and the Key coin to the series. We have a limited supply, these could be the last 1996 Silver Eagles you'll ever see." Only $129.99 ...........for a gem BU No thanks. I do however have my MS 69 as part of my Brown Label collection, and a couple of others " just in case people really believe 4 mil is rare "

Sorry...I forgot to mention the price. The guy wants $50 for them...not a great price but not bad. Especially if I can get ones in great shape.
Thanks for all the comments.

If you're looking to collect a year set of eagles, picking one up for $50 isn't bad. Personally, I wouldn't buy more at that price, however. There are too many opportunities out there to find them for the same price or much closer to what is being asked for other years. Even my coin dealer only asks about $7 over for them when he has them in. Have you gone to a shop and asked if they have any and what they'd charge?

No, I haven't went to a shop. I really don't have a coin shop close to me. There is a jewelry store within a few miles and they have some coins. I'll stop by there and see what they have.
Thanks.

Silver is only $31 and change right now. Seems like one heck of a premium at $50. They better be MS67 plus for $50 bucks...guaranteed!

YES. As long as you can make sure you are getting high quality coins, get a few at 50 bucks.
