This nickel has the look of an AU coin. Luster is present but seems muted. The obverse stars and the high points of the wreath on the reverse seem to show a little wear, although that could be mostly strike weakness. I see what look like light hairlines especially in the left obverse field. Overall I'd give it an AU55. It's still a nice-looking coin and you gotta have one of these for your type set!

I say its a AU coin but has been harshly cleaned and would probably net in the XF range at a top tiered TPG

I bought this coin as an EF-40. In the pictures I can see the hairlines ya'll mentioned. In hand they are not visible, but you can see them under 10x magnification. Interestingly, there is a light scratch that runs from the corner of the mouth all the way down to the base of the neck that is visble in hand but didn't show up on the picture.

I bought this coin from a dealer that has been mentioned on the forum as reputable. Some of the coins he has for sale on his website are listed as cleaned, this one was not. I don't have enough experience to make the call, but "harshly cleaned" seems, well.....a little harsh. It brings to mind images of steel wool & Brasso, which just don't fit. The pictures look very similar to how the coin looks under my 10x loupe & are probably the best I can get.

I know I have said this before, but it would be nice if I could get someone experienced & local to go over my coins with me. I think it would be a valuable learning experience.

One man's harshly is another man's gently is another man's whizzed. If you like the coin, it doesn't much matter.
