hi I am new on this forum and I am looking for some help with this pupienus on its authenticity
may I firstly say that in reality there is much more detail especially on the obverse and that as far as I can see there is no evidence of a seam on the edges 25mm and 9.09g

not easy from the photos the coin actually has much more detail especially on the obverse and is not so soft around the edges as the photo portrays
sorry for that I have never been able to take great shots
I would appreciate anymore comments and tomorrow I will try and get a few photos using a softer light which may help determine thankyou for your comments
one thing I can say in its favour is there doesn't seem to be any sign on the edges of a seam
i have found an AS of pupienus weighing 10.3g so not too far out with its weight

The coin looks OK to me. Depending on the size and weight, it could be an AS.

I think it is a cast modern reproduction/fake. The soapy appearance, minute casting pits, broader than usual letter strokes, and rounding of the transition from type to field all argue it is not genuine.

i have read all the above opinions and will get some better photos but I will put at the top in my first post the Lanz coin on wildwinds to show that the letters are correct for this particular coin
it is almost a die match except for small details like the back chair leg which seems to be at a different angle
anymore thoughts will be gladly received thanks for looking

Faustina, to CCF!

I am not an expert but the fist thing I did yesterday when I saw this coin was look for a fake match. IMHO I would want to see a die match to convince me of its authenticity because of is soapy appearance, the lettering just doesn't look right to me, and the wear makes it look like it was placed in tumbler.

I hope a die match is found to put doubts on this coin to rest. BTW, where did you pick this up?

Hello Helen (faustina),
I saw your query of this same coin on Forum and the general consensus there was it is a cast copy.
If the person sent it to you, for free, unsure of its authenticity, then it seems it is not genuine.
Anyhow, if you did not have to pay for it, it will serve as a good study piece on what a cast typically looks like.

just trying to get some more answers and I am still looking round for any information
I can find
great site and friendly peeps I can get used to this

on a seroius note yes I was sent this coin by a forum member it was one of 140 coins purchased in a collection which was bought from tennants auctioneers yorkshire and seems to have several different opinions
I saw yesterday that copper asses were actually cast at some times in the roman times and this is something I would like to follow up
I understand what you mean by the soapy look but I do hope to get some better photos as it does look sharper in reality hope that helps any comments especially any knowledge in asses being cast I will be most interested thankyou forum members for your time

TJ have you looked how close a match it is to the LANZ coin which is printed beneath my coin the writing looks spot on to me and it looks the correct style thanks for your comments much appreciated

These similarities struck me too - been a bit busy lately so not had a chance to give this much thought, I'm still in the head scratching camp atm
