I have read about people finding loonies in circulation that were not minted for circulation. I can recognize special coins, but which standard right facing loon coins were not made for circulation? Also, I see people talk about "1998w", for example. What is the "w"?

Minted in Winnipeg rather than Ottawa.

Is there a different mintmark? I'd love a list of set-only years, or a link to a guide.

1998w
2000w
2003wp

The 2003 if I can recall just has the w on the loonie and toonie, because they aren't plated.
2012 old version is sought after too.

1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 were all not made for circulation.

This will give you a list of the varieties.

There are also discussion on this forum (try the circulation threads) and I think someone even had a complete list going somewhere here.

Charlton Standard Catalogue volume 1 will help too. It shows three varieties for 2006, settling loon olympic, regular loon and regular loon with RCM logo.

2006 was a pretty common year almost 50,000,000 loonies minted, unless it was in regards to the 2006p penny found in certain PL sets.

2002 and 2003 had lower mintage's 2.3 and 5.1 million respectively.

Is there anything special about 2005? I have been trying to fill up my Terry Fox collector card with just regular circulation coins (that I found in changes), and so far I think I only came across the Terry Fox loonie, and a dime (?)...

There are less than 13 million Terry Fox loonies and over 31 million for regular.
My problem is trying to find uncirculated looking loonies, most are well used.
