Hi All,

I went to the local coin dealer nearby and I took a look around. Since I am still new to the hobby I wanted something other than my circulated Statehood Quarters which I am enjoying collecting.

I looked around and saw the 2009 Lincoln Cent brochure on the counter. The dealer showed me 4 rolls from each mint of the 2009 Lincoln Cents. I was sold. I bought 4 from the philly mint and 4 from the Denver mint so I have 2 collections now. I paid only 22cents per coin but since they were handled by the dealer without gloves out of each individual roll what would these pennies Grade be? I know they would not be uncirculated? And the dealer wouldnt give me a straight answer. I hope someone can help.

thank you

John

1) no clue why you would want to grade common date cents

2) Mint sealed 2009 rolls go for $3-4 roll without the worries about handling by anyone

...but during the 2009 Formative years cent double die reverse craze I did submit quite a few DDR's to be graded and MS63-64 were common (from sealed rolls) with some 66-67 outliers

You can handle coins without gloves and still have them be uncirculated as long as you only touch the edges. The only way to grade them though would be with pictures of them

Thanks for the info guys.

@ Foxwoods Man. I am still new at the hobby and learning of course everyday. Whenever I read most posts everyone has a grade for the most part on the coin in the topic, so thats why I asked the question. I can see it only needs to be graded if I am after value instead of enjoying the collection.

$11 per roll is insanely expensive. The most valuable roll is the LP4 since they have the lowest mintage. Last I saw they were around $5-6 per roll retail...and that's for a sealed bank or mint roll.

I'm sure all the coins he sold you were mint state red or he wouldn't even have them in inventory.

You bought 8 coins total - two examples each of the four designs, one P and one D - correct? And they were 22 cents each - so you spent $1.76? Seems reasonable. If you bought 8 rolls at 22 cents per coin, that was too much but I think it was individual coins...

As far as grade, the MS63/64 is probably correct on average. They are still uncirculated even if lightly and carefully handled. It's great to have all four designs...congrats!

Yes,like mentioned about the "Formative Years" 2009p,check the reverse for the varieties! Esp. the double-thumbs! The skeleton finger variety is a nice and valuable one if found. One of many varieties in that series. It's worth the hunt. - joey
