for future reference, all Canadian coins (25c and 10c) are silver up until 1968. However, only half of the 1968 quarters and dimes are silver (.5 silver .5copper) the rest are nickel.

we did and do. A largely unsuccessful attempt was made by the Royal Canadian Mint to promote the use of the coin when a special edition was released in 2002 marking the 50th anniversary of the accession of Elizabeth II to the throne. After this failed promotion, the mint stopped distributing 50 cent pieces to banks, and now only sells them in rolls or in coin sets available directly from their Numismatic Department.

The 50 cent pieces in Canada were silver until 1967

I managed to hit a bank in Toronto one day and they had $750 in 50c pieces.

Went through every last one of them, I'd say 80% were from 2002.

Took what I wanted and about $700 went back to another local bank... needless to say they were not very happy.

For circulation coinage. 1968 50 cents and dollars are nickel. 1967 50 cents and dollars are 80% silver. (as royalsilver said) 1968 10 and 25 cents are half 50% silver (non-magnetic) and half nickel (magnetic). 1967 10 and 25 cents are half 50% silver and half 80% silver so generally accepted as 65% silver. All the 1967 PL 10 and 25 cents are 80% silver though. Coins 1920-1966 are 80% silver except for the 1920 (and 1921 if you ever get your hands on one that isn't counterfeit!) 5 cents are .925 sterling silver. Coins prior to 1920 are .925 sterling silver.
