Poll Question
Many of you are aware that we Americans constantly debate the existence of our dollar coin, its failure to circulate, the obvious solution of eliminating the one dollar note, and the widespread resistance to that change. Well, my northern friends, you have successfully done what we have not. It is obvious that the change did not cause civil war or plunge your nation into total anarchy. But how do you really feel? It is time for you to voice an opinion. Please note: The Staff cannot see how you voted, but we can see who voted. That being said, I ask that only Canadian members vote in this poll. All members are free to comment. How did you feel about the adoption of the one dollar coin and elimination of the one dollar note...

I think why it went over so well in Canada was because it was like the penny they just quit making them 1987 dollar coins are still around but the paper note would only last a couple of years at the most in circulation. Your Government will have to follow our example if they want change when you have both in circulation it will never work?

Yes, that is the problem! Our one dollar coin will never properly circulate until the one dollar note is removed from circulation. The point of this poll is to prove it by showing how Canada did it; and hopefully how the people accepted it.

When the dollar note was discontinued here, I can't really say that I cared one way or the other, except that our "Loonie" was a bit of an amusing curiosity.
Looking at it now, I think it makes sense to use a coin for the relatively small one dollar denomination, because a coin can last for many years in circulation, whereas the paper notes need to be replaced frequently due to wear.

We also had 2 notes until 1996 and now have 2 dollar coins.
Two dollar notes in the US are rare and introducing a 2 coin along with a 1 dollar coin seems logical. Otherwise everyone will need to buy new belts to hold up their pants...teenage boys excepted.

It seems Americans spend more time, energy and money debating everything under the sun and at the end of the day, still nothing gets done? *** Excess political comments removed - Please stay on topic ***Perhaps you guys down south should tune into C.T.V. news and learn something new! Canadian's first of all, are not as Conservative as American's, nor are we as Patriotic. Drive by any Canadian sub-division and you'll be hard pressed to find one Canadian flag on a front lawn/veranda. Now, getting back to the loonie vs paper bill debate, if in doubt what to do? I always say, "Do as the Canadian's do, and you won't go wrong!" >coins last longer, saving tax payer's money in the long run. >harder and more expensive to counterfeit >+ when''s the last time you ever found an error or variety in a note? Quote: Drive by any Canadian sub-division and you'll be hard pressed to find one Canadian flag on a front lawn/veranda There are three on my street. And one guy had an Obama election sign on his lawn last fall. Dunno what's happening in the GWN anymore. I too blame CNN. BTW - on the topic and on second thought. It was the toonie that was harder to tolerate; it's the one that really pulls down your pants. Not hard to find 10 bucks of heavy change in your pocket after a night out.

As a YN I wasn't even born when the change happened so I've grown up with the dollar coin and I have to say I've never had any complaints about it. People say that if you have a bunch of dollar coins they will weight down your pocket, well if you have a bunch of dollar bills they might make your wallet fat and hard to close.

I was in my mid-twenties when the loonie came into existence, and I thought it was kind of neat at the time. It brought back memories of when I was younger and nickel dollars were still to be found in circulation every now and then, so a dollar coin was no real stretch for my mind to get around.
When the time comes, I hope you neighbours to the south have as much success with the switch as we did!

The Canadian government didn't have to face the banknote paper, nor the zinc core planchet maker, lobbyists.
Last I read, there was some claim the US dollar note now lasts 4 years, and so the economics against it are gone. But, outright lies by corporate interests are commonplace.
As for the penny, that appears to mostly basic corporate welfare. Put Lincoln on a new dollar coin if that is the concern.

Here in Ontario, CA, when I drive to the golf course in the summer, there's a guy with a 'Ron Paul' sign on his front lawn!!

Interesting topic. The vending machine companies were staunchly against it, but now love it .. until the RCM either changes sizes, alloys, or makes plated crap. Any of those takes a retooling of the machines to accept them. Not many folks in the US have enough change or uncrinkled bills to use a vending machine, but up here everyone has loonies and toonies. The birth of the loonie, and more so the toonie, spelled the end of the 50 cent piece that had been losing favor somewhat since the 50's. Since there were only so many slots in the cash registers and now toonies had to have a place, 50 cent pieces were essentially eliminated .. much to my chagrin.

To have a Bank note for such a small denomination just seems silly to me now. The loonie and toonie just make sense.
We Canadians even contemplated retiring our 5 dollar notes in 2005 but it was rejected due to overwhelming negative polls. I for one welcome the idea of a 5 Dollar coin.

Good poll jbuck! Quote: Two dollar notes in the US are rare No, quite common actually just rarely used. Quote: It seems Americans spend more time, energy and money debating everything under the sun and at the end of the day, still nothing gets done? Nail on the head. We are a stubborn bunch. Until our elected officials have the cojones to just stop making the bills nothing will change.

Split time in both countries. I hate the loonies and toonies, eight or more of them and I have to pull my belt in another notch, so my pants don't sag. I try to get rid of them ASAP.
