The ice breaker in my seated type set. This one is fairly common, but was the only specimen available at all my local coin shops that fit the bill. I got a great deal though! I'll have to search out the rest online or at shows. I'm hoping to add some variety and pick out some low mintage dates. Let's see how well my photography skills are this time around.

Over all XF-45 with visible wear on the observe. With the uniform color it suggests a prior cleaning. Very comparable to my example.

I will go with AU-50. From the last picture, I only see very limited amount of mint luster remaining which I think will hold it back from a higher grade.

I don't really know what to make of the guesses everyone made of the grade. In hand, I think the reverse looks AU58 possibly better. There is no wear and only the chatter in the fields. The luster looks original and comparative to MS coins I have seen slabbed. The obverse clearly has wear and less luster. Has this been dipped? Probably? If it was cleaned, it apparently wasn't improper enough for NGC.

Westcoin, great job on your guess of AU53, would love to know how you came to see it as such! I can understand why everyone said details (cleaning) because of the uniform color, but I have seen slabs out there of the seated type in AU that have uniform color and no details grade.

it's a great coin; we tend to be more harsh on older coins with a uniform color but NGC saw what a fine example it is too.

It is a very nice coin, the obverse has a lot of flat spots that is why I gave it ef45

I would stand by a conservative grade of XF-45. An AU coin theoretically should still have 50% of original luster remaining. Admittedly, that is a very subjective judgment and TPG standards seem to have relaxed in that regard. I agree that this coin has likely been dipped or otherwise processed in a manner that muted the luster. Otherwise, with the AU-class detail the luster should have been much stronger, especially on the superior reverse.

NGC apparently assessed this coin just in terms of detail and judged the surfaces to be market acceptable, resulting in a no-problem grade. An XF-45 would have been a more balanced assessment that took into account the less-than-original surface quality. Just my opinion, of course!

I think this is a lesson learned for me! I will be sure to try to look for the ones that still have the black tarnish silver tends to attract over the years and not be taken in by the grade from the TPG. Don't get me wrong I am extremely pleased with this coin (and the price I paid for it) but I am also happy it doesn't have a details grade. Thanks for all the comments and insights! I am new to buying slabs, but I am trying to stick to buy the coin not the holder.

Also, do they still assign a net grade? So if the reverse was AU58 and the obverse XF45, that would net out to AU53. I agree the obverse is weak, but the reverse doesn't even come close to XF45. There literally is no wear on the feathers and the luster is much more apparent in the fields. Help a new slab collector learn the tricks of the trade!
