Hello,

Please grade this coin.

Also, I am not aware of any errors or varieties for silver 3 cent pieces.

However, let us know if this coin or any other silver 3 cent pieces have error or variety characteristics.

Thanks,
mdpmedia

I've noticed that there have been no responses so far. Almost nobody knows how to grade these things and almost nobody ever collects them other than one piece for a type set. I am barely any more qualified, but I'll take a shot.

I'm gonna say VG-8. The shield looks stronger, but your rims and lettering look worse and I think it goes beyond strike. These coins were so small and thin that I've seen the design get progressively lost from the outside in...along with usual high point downwards wear.

Count me in as not being good at grading these also. But based on a few guides and a couple I have, to me it looks G-6.
Just my 3 cents worth.

I am at G6 details - I believe the shield is strong enough to keep it above AG, but the letters keep it from VG. Unfortunately I think there are enough hits that it would get a details grade.

Cherry pickers does list three different varieties, two repunched dates and one DDR on the stars around 5:00 on the reverse. If you think you see something there, especially on the repunched date, would you mind posting close ups of those areas? One of the RPD does carry a premium according the CP.

Hello,

Because the horizontal line crossing 'under' the III does not appear on the top surface of these III letters, is it possible that a die crack or some other die anomaly has formed here?

I did not pick up on that! My best guess would be a problem with the planchet prior to strike but if I were you I would wait for error experts to chime in.

Did you have a chance to look at the date for the possible RPD?

Hi,

Per the Cherry pickers's 5th Edit. Vol 1 that I possess the two RPDs and one DDR referred to are non existent on this coin after further inspection.

By the way is this version of Cherry pickers's 5th Edit. Vol 1 the latest update available?

If it does happen to be an older version, what is the latest Cherry pickers's volume and edition version entitled and what are the 'significant' differences from the one I I am currently using?

I just want to know if a newer version has a sufficient number of changes/additions to justify a new purchase at this point in time.

Thanks

VG 8 would be about right.
I see far too many of these, ruined by holing.

I think it's a scratch, albeit an old scratch, that was worn down over the columns making it not appear there any more. It's consistent with the scratches on the obverse. I'd go G6 myself, but it's not as damaged as many I've come across over the years, these little coins didn't fair very well in circulation.

I also don't see any signs of the RPD but closer photos of the date area would help in that regard.

I'm also at around G6 and agree with westcoin in thinking it was an old scratch that has been worn off the |||. I love these old thrimes, but wow are they hard to grade!

mdpmedia, that was the one I was using. I do not see a 6th edition anywhere so that may be the most up to date.

My grade would be VG-8/scratched. (Rationale: Everything is readable, has even wear, small gouges and rim dings, possible environmental damage obverse 2-5 o'clock?).

Thanks for bringing up the potential RPD issue.

I appreciate the feedback.
