Hello, I recently purchased an 1877-s quarter in a set of coins. The coin has very good details, but the toning is interesting. On the back, you can almost see a straight line where the tone of the coin changes. I would like to know if you guys think this toning is natural or if you think it has been cleaned, and how much you think the coin is worth. Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Looks natural enough and about AU-53 to 55. Very nice quarter.

Nice looking coin! Certain areas in the fields look to have been wiped or cleaned long ago. It would be market acceptable as problem-free to me and likely AU53 as Gyrene7483 noted.

I would also call it natural toning but the really interesting, and potentially very valuable, thing is the mintmark. It looks like it could be an S over Horizontal S which would triple it's value. Here's a pic of an S over S:

Does yours look like that? Standard "S" mintmark would put the value around $130 with the S over S at $400.

AU53 to me as well, very nice, that toning may have been from being in an album and held in with tape or a bit of paper that caused the discoloration, nothing to say not genuine or AT, I think it's natural.

I agree that AU53 is about right. And I also wonder about this being an 1877-S, S over horizontal S

Thanks for the replies everyone! I am happy to hear that the coin appears to be original. I didn't even notice the mintmark, but looking at the coin again, I think you are right. It does appear to have a side ways s underneath the s mintmark. I will take some closer pictures of the mintmark later today. Thanks again!

After looking at the coin, I do not think it has the s over s error. It looks more like just a lighter toning around the mint mark, but I can't tell for sure. Here is a picture of the mint mark.

Would this coin be worth sending to Anacs? I have never gotten a coin graded before.
