Just sent an email with the pictures of the 1889 P Morgan dollar with the die gouge. They requested the pictures through email. I'll update the status once I hear from them. In the meantime, even if it shows signs of polish, should I have it graded if they deem it a discovery piece or a new variety?

Well yeah. If it is a new variety, the only way to establish that coin as the first is to have it graded and entered into their records.

And,

I have heard that ANACS is the TPG for VAM attribution.

...I just don't like their holder.

Scurry64 has the correct link to the pictures. Here's a discussion on Vamworld about it with more pictures. Just sent another email to ANACS. I think my previous email got lost.

Just found the email. They said it was PMD, but why if it's raised?

Id probably take the shot and send it in anyway and let them see it in hand instead of trying to do it from photos

I'll see what I can do. At least you don't have to be a member like PCGS requires.

I think its like 20 dollars plus shipping for them. Unless everyones confident that its something else and they can say what it was I would just want to remove the doubt personally

The only person that can designate a new VAM variety is Leroy Van Allen. I'd assume if John Roberts at ANACS takes another look at it it will remove all doubt, if Leroy needs to see it, then John can help with that. But I'd trust John Robert's opinion on a VAM attribution.
