ebay is apparently allowing the sale of fake silver bars! http://www.ebay.com/itm/39053145166...trksid=p3984I can't help but wonder how many of these will be popping up at flea markets and elsewhere. The seller suggests that these fakes are a good means of thwarting thieves, the bad guys. I have to wonder how many good guys will be victimized by these deceptive bars? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

How can ebay allow this when the silver plated bar reads 1oz Fine Silver with no notation of it being PLATED

I have seen a few of these, I would never buy bars off ebay, I filed report and so should everyone else. I think in the UK it is illegal to sell anything that is stamped for being silver when it is not silver regardless if you tell people that it is white metal

As far as finding a fake I assume that since they are made of brass and plated silver if you did a specific gravity test it would be off. Or a destrutive test...

Is this against ebay's rules? I would not put it past them to be OK with this. I don't feel right reporting this if ebay allows it, though this I find morally reprehensible. I wonder how many of the people who bought 82 of them read the fine print.

Quote: I wonder how many of the people who bought 82 of them read the fine print. Answer - all of them, they just buy them to re-sell at full silver spot in a couple of months from now at the flea markets. Quite ingenious actually, criminal, but ingenious non the less. Quote: "Too many of us look upon Americans as dollar chasers. This is a cruel libel, even if it is reiterated thoughtlessly by the Americans themselves." - Albert Einstein I believe this quote is recited daily in Chinese schools, or how else would they think of "FAKE" silver bars and coins.

I bought one of these out of curiosity. The only real easy difference is that they have no serial number at the bottom. I filed an edge to expose the brass. It's just a novelty to me, but I'm sure there are allot of naive people who pay too much for these fakes. Most of the bars on ebay are plated.

Legit Sunshine Minting bars don't have serial numbers either.

Ya your right. I thought that they had serial numbers. The one I got weighs 31.1 grams also (troy ounce). It's definitely a fake though.

I should have said that most of the bars that pop up in the Morgan dollar section auctions that I've seen are plated. If you specifically search for 1 oz silver bullion bars most of those are real. I spend allot of time looking at Morgans.

That could be true, I dont spend much time in that section though I will be for a type set. Generally if you stick to the philosophy that something that seems to good to be true it is that seems to eliminate a lot of the shady sources

I 'spose The Sunshine Mint would be the one to notify to get this listing removed... let me know how it goes.
