Had the coin not been defaced it would have been very pretty.
Now it is a silent testament to a fool's wanton action.

It's a shame that I am looking at that coin as an ugly duckling. If only somebody didn't trash the 1, it would be a perfect buy! WHY the inhumanity to this innocent coin?!?!

Looks like it has had a harsh cleaning as well unfortunately.

That was one of my thoughts.
The other is, with that sort of color and texture, is it genuine?

Does kind of look cast but I'm guessing that it may be due to the cleaning. Overall not a fan of this one, surprised it brought $50.

Haven't you seen modern coins that have been abused and altered? Well at one time this was a modern coin too. The coloration of the field and the spot where the 1 was removed look similar, I would suspect the alteration was done a LONG time ago when the coin was worth fifty cents.

Yep obvious PMD. TOo bad it was a great coin, looks very similar to the "864" Two Cent coin I put up with the filled die 1 last week, only the damage is plainly visable, not from a filled die.
