Hi all, I have just received an email back from the RBA and thought I would share this.

Quote:
Thank you for your email and your observations.

Unfortunately we are unable to identify any of the banknotes that meet your description listed on ebay, which makes it difficult for us to offer further comment.

As you may know, however, under the Crimes (Currency) Act 1981, it is illegal to intentionally deface, disfigure, mutilate or destroy any banknote that is lawfully current in Australia without the relevant consent. Consequently, if you do have future concerns, an option available to you is to refer the listing(s) as they appear to the Australian Federal Police for consideration.

Obviously, as our Adelaide friend changed his ebay viewing status, the RBA couldn't see his listings. So, I'm wondering if anyone on the forum did a screen dump of any of his entries that they could look at?

Thanks, M

Thanks Unicorn, I've passed this info on to the RBA and hope they might revisit ebay before passing the buck () to the Fed Police.

Thanks everyone for your info which I have passed on to the RBA. Thanks especially to Nancy for the very well documented info via email that I have also passed on.

Erkle, you raise a good point. Maybe money laundering is involved as well and worth the relatively small ebay fees involved?

I'm not sure what you are expecting the RBA to do.
As the RBA rightly says, if people are undertaking illegal activities on ebay then that is a matter for the police.

The images are not very good.

Are the images I can see when I click on the link the same as when they were offered for sale on ebay?

How sad that people payed such prices for what I am told are tampered with notes.

All errors when it comes to inks have to be treated with suspicion.

It is something I would not get to excited about to buy on ebay or anywhere else for that matter.

How Sad!

That's right. Whether police would have the desire/resources to conduct an investigation, I'm not so sure...In any case, I'm pretty certain the persons doing the tampering will just claim they found the note in change....

The RBA should know about the tampering, though, just in case there may be a way of overcoming the problem; new inks, substrate or something like that.

Puts a bad taste in the mouth of genuine collectors

One of the sellers actually listed the serial No of the note he was selling.

Guess which side he removed with acetone
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

Yes, they were so lucky ...... fancy finding half a dozen or more of these in their change! ...... oh, if only my parents had a deli in Adelaide then I too would be able to find ..... perhaps hundreds .....(likely in close proximity to my bottles of acetone) ..... and possibly some of those little goldy coloured silver jubilee 50c pieces.

Still a big to awildeheart for taking the initiative.
