I was just looking at PCGS for a couple of VAM submittals and I see that there is "only" a list of 317 Morgan and 52 Peace dollar that they will attribute.

This would explain why there are so many identified Morgans and Peace dollars out there without being attributed on their labels.

I thought that PCGS was there to make money by providing this service.

"The Top 100 Morgan dollar Varieties: The VAM Keys; SSDC Official Guide to the Hot 50 Morgan dollar Varieties; The Official Guide to the Top 50 Peace dollars; The 1878 Morgan dollar 8-TF Attribution Guide; and the VAM book, Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars."

If it is the " VAM Book" shouldn't they attribute it?

Perhaps it's time to give ANACS another try..if they would only change their holder to be more appealing.

"ANACS offers attribution and verification services for all listed VAM numbers, including new discoveries."

This is because ANACS' Director of Attribution Services is John Roberts, who is also one of the truly major players in VAMming. He has a huge number of discoveries on his own, and nobody is better at the attribution game than him.

PCGS' problem is that they either choose not to put the time into arcane varieties, or they lack the talent to do so. Keep in mind, new VAMs are still being discovered all the time, so it's an ongoing process for an attributor. There are probably a few thousand VAMs which are not identified on paper anywhere, and the only public information regarding them is to be found at VAMworld.

with PCGS and NGC the coin has to be included in a list that some VAM enthusiast puts in print (like the TOP-100 and HOT-50). As SD said above the reason ANACS does attribute each and every VAM LVA lists is because of the management having a major interest with VAM's in general. PCGS and NGC are usually pretty quick to list coins that are added into a list that becomes popular sometimes and then sometimes one will add it and the other will not. I believe there is one other service that is considered a third tier service to many that will also list every VAM on the label as well but I am not even sure they are even in business
