My first submissions to NGC have been graded and are on their way home to me.

In honor of this momentous event, I am issuing a couple of grading challenges. I'll post the answers when my precious package arrives.

This first one is an interesting case. It is an 1855 Half Cent, originally in an NGC slab. However, I had cracked it and kept it in my 7070 for a few years. I decided I liked it well enough I wanted it in my slabbed Half Cent collection, so I sent it back to NGC raw.

Your challenges are: (1) To guess whether NGC graded it the same both times, and (2) To determine the "right" grade.

Note that in these photos you can see only a bit of what is actually pretty strong luster.

Wow beautiful coin! I'd guess it comes back ms 62. What was the grade on the original slab?

I will post both the original slab grade and the new slab grade when it arrives back from NGC.

I don't see any wear and there is lots of luster. I think it is currently graded MS-63 BN but was originally in a MS-64 BN holder.

My package from NGC arrived today, so here, as promised, is the answer to my grading challenge.

I bought this 1855 Half Cent in an NGC AU58 holder. I always thought it was an *awfully* nice AU58!

You were unanimous that it was an MS coin, and everyone placed it between 62 and 64. I'm happy to report that NGC agreed, grading it:

AU-58 to MS-62 is quite a difference. I suppose that goes to show theyre becoming less tough these days.

westcoin - Thanks for the compliment! I love these Half Cents, and have a great time comparing notes with everyone here.

enworb - I am not sure I can use this particular coin as an example of grading standards going down. If you saw this coin in hand, you would probably agree that it screams "mint state." Glowing luster, no perceptible wear, great even color, clear fields...

In this instance, I think it was more an example of some long-ago NGC grader having a bad day. The re-grading is a more accurate representation of the coin.
