As a good general reference what do you think about Renniks. Renniks Australian Coin and Banknote Values catalogue. kg5 Edited by kg5 02/24/2013 01:28 am

I picked up the latest only just last week. To be honest, I was kind of disappointed (it just didn't seem to have enough info for my liking - but you can never fully please everyone). It also seemed like there might have been some problems with printing/publishing (some images labelled incorrectly, other paragraphs repeated etc).
That being said, I've found myself always going back to it.

It is very popular. So is Greg McDonald's Guide to Australian Coins and Banknotes. I have seen far more dealers use Maccas. Neither have a great deal or numismatic information within but can give you a reference for price.
Personally I use Maccas. The prices for low-mid grade coins are around double what you would want to pay so I usually aim for 50-75%. Some of the prices for UNC-CH.UNC+ coins are getting a bit closer to actuall prices you might look at paying. I also like the fact that Maccas is nice and small and can fit in my back pocket easily.
Remember that these book are price catalogues and not numismatic references. Dont buy them expecting to learn all the ins and outs of Australian coins.

Thank you both for sharing! About Renniks being a good price reference and I will look into Greg McDonald's Guide to Australian Coins and Banknotes. Hi enworb Quote: Remember that these book are price catalogues and not numismatic references. Dont buy them expecting to learn all the ins and outs of Australian coins. This is my next question. I need a silver pre decimal up to 1946 flaws and variations basic reference book. Any advice very welcome. Also another reference book for noodling decimal 20c 50c $1 $2 for flaws and variations basic. Any advice very welcome as well.

Not really any reference books as far as decimal varieties. Your best bet is to look through the error section here at some of the threads and see what other people have been saving.
Just a little tip, coin collectors tend to say error instead of flaw with the exception of a 'planchet flaw' which is a one type of error.

I think McDonalds is better. The impression I get is that the information is more accurate and comprehensive than Renniks. I haven't compared the price information though so I can't judge either.

personally, I prefer Renniks. But I am aware that a majority of Australians on CCF prefer Maccas. That said, my Renniks is about 6 years old, and I have a 10 year old Maccas, for cross-checking. Neither is much use when it comes to prices. As each new edition comes out, I watch what people put on CCF, but nothing that I've read, leads me to want to rush out and part with $30+.

Hi, I just paid $15.50 (Buy It Now, includes postage) for a new 2012 McDonalds on ebay. Seemed like a good price after surfing the net for quite a while. If anyone wants the ebay seller ID I bought it from, contact me and I'll pass on the info.

They are both good publications and I always get both Rennics and Meccas books each year. The Macca's book has far more information on decimal issues especially the NCLT coins

As for pre-decmial errors, Ian McConnolley recently published a book through Renniks, called Australian Pre-Decimal Coin Varieties (2nd Edition). It generally states different types of errors & their how rare they are. But this book doesn't have pricing.

Further to Goatie's comment, Fred Lever's reference book is also pretty good for varieties of pre-decimal coins.
It doesn't deal with errors, but is more comprehensive with varieties and other info.
I'm not sure where it can be sourced though.
My understanding is that sole distribution rights were given to one specific dealer a little while ago, but people I've spoken to who are looking for it haven't been able to find it.
Edit: Correction - Does deal with errors, detailing types of errors, rather than common errors for particular dates.

I saw copies at a local coin show last year. Not sure who the seller was though.
