Poll Question
I have only decided to collect proof Kennedy's (and a few others) as of this year.

Years ago I used to buy proof sets from the mint- all they issued was clad - each year . After years went by it was obvious I was losing money on the situation.

I I had been patient and waited, I could have had the sets for less money since they tended to devalue as time went on.

So now I see the 2012 clad set has been made in record low numbers.

Currenlty a clad proof 2012 half will cost me up to 10.00.

Do you think the price will stay at this or drop?

Thanks

Poll Choices
Forget it... in 2 years they will be half this price at most.
The price will likely stay 10.00 for years to come.
Snag one now before they escalate in price!
 Other - please explain.

I chose other because I think it depends. If the following years return to normal I could see it holding though I would give it a little bit of time and see what it does to make sure its not just a spike from it being unexpected. On the other hand if that mintage level is the new norm I think it will come down a bit.

The final mintage for the 2013 Clad Proof Set will be the arbiter here.

I think it will be a little higher than 2012 (less fence-sitters this year, thanks to the 2012's early sellout), but still under a million.

Buying just the half for $10 is one-sixth of the cost of buying the whole Set for $60, so you won't be out as much if they go down.

I used to be a fan of the clad proof sets - but I also see them as a losing proposition. The demand in the secondary market isn't any higher than the demand from the mint was, and the clad sets demand has been falling for years. The only reason to buy the proof sets these days, is the quality of the quarters over the regular issue mint sets - and even that isn't enough since you can buy just the quarter proofs. There has to be something that would make me want to buy a 2012 proof set in say 2017... and I can't single out a single coin in the set that is going to be different (besides the quarters) from 2011 or 2013... I think that is why the value of the sets has been declining for years. Since I can buy the unique coins in a stand alone set and the other coins just aren't unique enough to drive me or many others to see the value in buying the entire set. If you want these to have huge increases in value - I think you are looking to give them to you grandchildren. The base metals and generic coins are going to do it.

On the other hand - had you bought silver sets over the last 20 years...

The deciding thing for me is that the halves are NIFC, so the only way to get the coin at a somewhat reasonable cost is from the mint sets. If you get it from a dealer then you are going to be paying for that convenience. I'd much rather get it from a proof set because the other coins are useful in my collection.

If you're collecting them for the beauty of them being proof issues then fine but don't expect them to increase in value since there are so many struck for each year. They have no intrinsic value to speak of. Best way to collect them is find a dealer or two who are cracking out the sets and selling the individual coins that way you won't have the extra coins from the set to dispose of.

Shake your Magic 8 Ball and hope for the best.

I think the Kennedy half is one of the most beautiful common modern US coins.

Am I going to pay $10 for a 2012 clad? Unlikely. I think the price will drop unless the price of the metal goes up for other reasons. If it doesn't, I am not going to feel the "hole" in my collection. I have bigger things to worry about.

I think they will increase in value but it is going to take time. I am thinking a few decades. If it happens faster, kudos to those who gambled and won.
