I failed on the "1J" as far as being an attributed variety recognized by PCGS, I may have got a hold of one of the four types of 1921-D's that PCGS does recognize: "3A Wing Dot".

VAMmers, what do you think?

I think you are correct. It'll be interesting to see what PCGS graded this one. Nice pick by the way.

That is one of my two or three favorite 1921's. The trouble is, there are three recognized die states, and PCGS does not differentiate between them. VAM-3 has just the dot under the wing, and no die breaks. 3A - which you have here - has the wing break started, and possibly a second break over the A in STATES. 3B has a finished wing break into the denticles, like so:

3 is pretty common. 3A is darn scarce, and 3B may be a genuine R7 VAM, although a couple of high grade examples exist, including an MS66.

PCGS arbitrarily calls them all 3A.

Here is the full slab;

Here is a PCGS attributed 1921-D VAM 3A which shares a lot of the characteristics as mine does...

I'm thinking yours is a slightly later die state. You're in pretty thin air at MS64; you can plan on that thing carrying a substantial premium.

I was thinking the same thing (in different words of course, nice phrase though!) when I saw it. Your expertise is very reassuring, SsuperDdave.

Every once in a while the tide rolls in ones favor.

This one is not going to be for sale anytime soon (knocking on wood)...unless something else comes along.

I am heavily considering sending this one in for "variety attribution" ($24 (per) + $12 Reholder fee (per) + $8 Handling fee, and she would not be going there alone). There is just something gnawing at me knowing that this is a (potential) VAM 3A and not seeing it on the slab insert.

I know, some folks would say to leave it alone, wasted money, etc...but my other VAM's are labeled as such.

Everyone defines their collection as they wish. For me, the variety attribution wouldn't be justifiable, but for you it is. It's not necessary for resale - any decent VAMmer will know exactly what this coin is - but that's not your goal here. Spend the money, if that's what makes your collection look the way you want it.

I am kinda shallow like that SsuperDdave. Thanks!

I (like so many of us) like to play "show and tell" with family and friends with my coins (another reason to have them "entombed" in plastic) and the variation identifications on the labels usually stirs up questions and then I get to be the "coin nerd".
