, although 'finished' is a relative term... I need to go back and take a closer look at many of the coins I provisionally labeled as RPM or other variety (in blue on the list below). There were some years for which I only did naked eye exam because I pooped out and it wasn't worthwhile to chase an obscure DDO or DDR-- especially since the wear would make it almost impossible to verify anyway. The tally: 2129 (not including another 40 I doled out to my brother last week, assorted dates from the 20's to 40's, no significant varieties). More are likely to turn up when I go through the bags of silver Roosies. Mom sorted the dimes into Mercs vs Roosies and her eyes are 80 years old so there are likely to be a few more Mercs in those bags. Below is a list of the breakdown. I guess it is about what you'd expect from an accumulation of coins which were pulled from circulation. Since they are all circulated-- mostly heavily circulated-- I'm guessing that my granddad didn't begin pulling them from his register until a few years or more after the series ended. And predictably, the less worn coins are the later dates. Very few are AU or EF. I see no point in grading each one individually since the values are so similar. I did put aside nicer coins so that I can pull an assortment to keep. So now... what do I DO with them? We're going to sell most of them but I'm not sure of the best way to go about it. Decisions decisions. I was really hoping to find at least one of each type so that I'd have a full set to keep but as you can see there are several missing, including the biggies. Here's what wasn't in the hoard: 16-D, 21 P&D, 25-S, 26-S 28-S, 29-S, 31 D&S, 42/41, and 42/41-D. I guess I'll go ahead and buy or trade for those missing coins at some point since I'm so close to a full set.

I did a double take when I saw the number! I am not sure of the best way to sell them but on the up side, you are on the north side of $4000 in silver content!

My observation: 2129 Mercury dimes = $4,446 melt: http://www.silverrecyclers.com/Calc...culator.aspxAnother option, an almost complete set of mercs (74) no 1916-d, 1921, 1921-d. sells on ebay for ~ $225. You may need to trade/buy some to complete (74), by my math 2129/74 ~ 25 x $225 = $5,625 less eBay+paypal fees. I guess it depends how much time/work you want to invest.

I think I'd try putting together some assorted date rolls and list them on ebay to see what they bring. Mercury dimes tend to sell for a little over melt even in low grade. Decide on what you think would be an acceptable net price and then put a roll or two up for sale. If you are happy with the result then you are good to go!

Wow, nice. Did you say how you came across all these Mercs? Did I miss that part?

Well, personally--I would be happy to buy two 1929's off you (I want to complete a birth-year set for my grandparents, who both happen to be the same year). I know that's not a huge amount, but, you know, gotta start somewhere. (Yes, mods, I know any further discussion of that specifically needs to move to B/T/S if ThisIsFun is interested.)
Just a thought, you've passed your post limit, why not sell some here on CCF?

Actually, while I have passed my required post numbers I haven't met the time benchmark. I hit the 90 day mark on Friday though so I will probably offer various things to CCF members. I do have a friend who has expressed interest in buying virtually everything, or at least the silver. Whether he is serious or not is yet to be determined, although he did buy all the gold. I need to put aside what I want to keep and go from there. This weekend I'll start working on that. Perhaps I should also see what coins CCF members want first before selling in bulk. Still haven't examined all the types of coins. The Buffaloes are only half done. Each time I start to micro examine the Morgans and Peace dollars (VAMming) I get frustrated so those will be last. Sheesh, it's hard enough to assign VAMs on MS coins, but with circulated coins, it's like 'go ask God' (or if he's not available, SsuperDdave ) Speaking of my upcoming 90 day milestone, I'm planning another contest. This one won't require as much thinking... more of a raffle of sorts. I'll post it on Friday.

TIF, I am starting to work on my VAM skills. If you feel like posting a Morgan here or there, I will try to VAM it and get verification from the VAM experts here. Open offer, I will keep my eyes open. Cheers!

I'm still totally sitting here bright-eyed and bushy-tailed ready to pounce on your 1929's (that goes for a nice buff nickel, too, if you've got one--I have a 1929s with, um, character, that I got from a CCF'er and it's got a rather interesting pattern, but I'd like one with more normal wear, too).
