What would be the best thing to do with a coin that has had a sticker on it for so long that when I pulled the sticker off it has discoloration?

Here is an example.

probably a soak in acetone would help (not hurt).

Not a real lot can usually be done with that situation. Sort of like those lines found on coins that were in a Whitman Folder a long time. That coin has had toning started where there was nothing to hinder it. Under the tape or whatever, the metal was protected. In such instances Acetone will not do much.
IF the coin is not excessively valuable, I'd say try dabbing a small amount of gun bluing solution to the clear spot. Not much to loose.

acetone should take off all residue from the glue and paper, it should not do much to the clor of the coin, unless it's dark from dirt sticking to it from the sticky glue. Can't hurt it so go ahead and give it a soak, - be careful, no open flames near by and do it outside in well ventillated area, as acetone has nasty fumes.
