I'm new to these forums as well as to coin collecting in general and thought some of you could give me some thoughts and help on grading this LWC. Any insight is much appreciated! I hope the pictures turned out well I just bought the cheap point and shoot tonight after reading some of the photographing threads here.

to CCF. I am not good at grading but it does look cleaned which will lower any value it has.Wait for a member who knows how to grade. John1

Thanks for the welcome! How can you tell it's been cleaned? I just bought the ANA standards grading book hopefully that will help me out. I appreciate the quick reply

It has a dull look to it and the color isn't right. Also the darker areas around the letters is a sign of bad cleaning. John1

Thanks, John. I did notice the darker areas I just wasn't sure the cause.

bullreed, to CCF, enjoy your stay with us. Your coin to me looks cleaned also, so I will call it VF-30/35 details, cleaned.

Welcome to CC!
Unfortunately, this coin has been harshly cleaned.

Cleaned, AU details. Don't sweat it too much, though, a 1930 is not a particularly rare coin, nor tough to get in AU/MS if you're seeking the same for your collection.

Thanks for the grades, yeah I figured I'd spend "pennies" learning before I start investing money in bad coins. It cost a nickel, so I can learn without taking a hit to the wallet.

Smart! Learn to spot those problem coins because there's a ton of them out there. Like Tele said, these are relatively cheap in MS grades, so you won't have a problem replacing it when the time is right.

For the record my personal thoughts were XF-45, I totally missed on it being cleaned. I know to look for scratches / swirls but I missed on this coin when it was so blatant to all of you.

In a more brown example this is what to look for in a original, uncleaned coin:
