I picked this beauty up last night and wanted to see what VAM'ers can make out of her. She is not as "toned" as the previous, but she has some desirable traits. Thank you for your comments and interest! (PCGS image) Many thanks goes to SsuperDdave and dave700x for the edification tips on this highly addictive subject...you guys have helped create a MONSTER! Edited by oih82w8 02/28/2013 4:12 pm

You are on a roll! Without close ups of the date and mint mark I can only guess VAM2B1.

Much better. I'll revise my guess to VAM2C based on the new images. Nice!

VAM-2 is an utterly fascinating case. The die pair was continually tweaked throughout its' life, clashed and polished multiple times. There are over a dozen sub-varieties and many of those are very close in appearance even though they happened at widely-separated times in the lifetime of the die. It's amazing this pair lasted as long as it did. I'm tentatively calling this one 2B2. Is it possible, oih82w8, to get those nice detail pics of the lips, the back of the cap where all the clashing and breaking happened, and the top of the right wreath so we can count the clashes? Like so: For this variety, you not only have to look at very subtle differences, but you also have to visualize the whole progression and where the specific coin you you're looking at might have come in that progression. You can learn more about VAMming from an 1882-CC VAM-2 than 100 dissimilar coins.

Ok, it's been a little more than a day and I don't think that it would be drawn out like this. My apologies to SsuperDdave for making him work harder than he should on this coin ; (sellers images) This is another of those plate coins that PCGS Coin-facts has on their website, which is how I was able to provide such clear close-up areas that SsuperDdave and dave700x were asking for. I consider this coin a " trifecta"; 1. CC 2. GSA 3. Recognized VAM3a. just a hint of crescent moon tone on the left rim and fileds.

I'm guessing that VAM-2B stage 3 is another way of saying VAM-2B2 as identified by SsuperDdave? To tell you the truth VAM world can spin you around on these die progression VAMs that have photos of different stages on the same pages. Nice "trifecta" oih82w8!

Quote: I'm guessing that VAM-2B stage 3 is another way of saying VAM-2B2 as identified by SsuperDdave? Yeah, that's PCGS' warped sense of VAMming in action. 2B2 is VAMworld's nomenclature but this one should be staged out like an Early Dollar. Based on the additional information, I'm sticking with 2B2. Assuming (as Dave pointed out) VAMworld's images are on point. Hit List 40, baby.

Thanks for all of the VAM info SsuperDdave and dave700x! I believe that I have hit a stopping point, or at least a "pause", in my Mint Mark Morgan dollar Collection - VAM Style with this one...it's out for delivery!

Question.... when did PCGS start on the stages of the Vam-2 type cc coins? I just got back a 1882 CC Vam-2e in 64 that they labeled as just a Vam-2c

Good question twohawks! I was asked the same thing by one of my local "coin buddies" and I thought (for a moment) that it may be a fake slab, but then again, there it is on PCGS Cert Verification; http://www.pcgs.com/Cert/26320350/According to the PCGS Certification Database, the requested certification number is defined as the following: COIN INFORMATION Cert Verification #: 26320350 PCGS Coin #: 413028 Date, mintmark: 1882-CC Denomination: $1 Variety: VAM 2B Stage 3 Minor Variety: Mint Error: Pedigree: GSA Country: The United States of America Grade: MS64 Mintage: 1,133,000 PCGS Price GuideSM Value: Holder Type: Standard Population: 20 View this coin in PCGS CoinFacts I have heard that PCGS does not get too specific in VAM sub-varieties. With this one being in the latest (?) three finger gasket, it may be something new.

Russ, I think the grader got spun around on the VAM-2C page that actually has plate photos of what appears to be VAM -2E. Specifically the multiple clash Vees next to the left wing.

Question ~ did the two rim bumps located on the reverse at K12 drop this down to a 64, or is it so minor and they overlook it?
[I have to stop zooming in on these coins]

Broken-Coin, I noticed that too when I was looking at it before I actually bought it. My wife told me that "you gotta stop focusing on what's wrong and keep concentrating at what's right". ( or something like that) I certainly don't remember everything my wife has told me, but somethings kinda stick with you. It could have been the chatter in front of Liberty' forehead, it could have been that the cheek was not clean enough, it could have been... In other words, if you are looking for fault, you will eventually find it.
