Hi All, I was looking to bid or buy a trio of IHC's on this e-bay listing, but wanted to ask what you all thought about the 1904. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-of-3-In...em3a7edf8498Does this look like it was cleaned? I ask because it looks more reddish than the other 2. All help is appreciated. John

I don't really know how to recognize cleaning, but it looks normal to me.

The 1900 and 1902 have the appearance I'd expect from later IHCs. The 1904 may have been exposed to the elements--the bronze reacted to something, and gunk may have removed.

THe 1904 looks to have been cleaned to some extent. I agree that something reacted with it causing the red tone. If you look between the feather tips, you can they are darker as well, that generally leads me to believe it has been cleaned. The value of the set is probably $3.00.

It simply tarnished differently, not necessarily cleaned. Gunk always tends to build up in the sheltered area of circulated coins. Simply a circulated coin. I would agree on the 3 bucks value.

If you look at them closely with the zoom feature they appear to have verdigris around the devices. If you can pick them up for a couple of dollars it wouldn't be a bad deal. Do you have any decent local coin shops or are there shows in your area? If so, you may want to check them out. It might be posible to find common date Indian Head cents in as good or better condition for around the same price or less.

They look acceptable as moderately circulated, common IHCs. It will usually cost more than $1 each to get decent examples in similar condition (Fine to Very Fine) so if you can get the lot for $3 I'd say you did well.

They look good to me too. Detecting cleaning the most difficult thing in coin collecting I hear. I always look at the color with coppers since old copper should be brown. If it is orange, there is a red flag. Of course there are acceptable types of cleaning within the numismatic community like soaking in distilled water, acetone, verdi-care, or even alcohol depending on the issue. Systematic scratches are another sure sign of cleaning. I don't see either on those coins and they like nice to me. Buy them if you like them. They are nice common date Indian heads, 2 VF one F. It is true I think that coins can discolor differently just by being out in the sun and dirt can be removed by it being carried around in your pocket. That is what makes cleaning detection difficult, evidence of cleaning can be caused something else. I wouldn't pay more than a buck a piece for those coins though, and at most you should pay is two for the VF coins and a dollar for the F. Place a bid for $3 with shipping and if you win them good, if not you can get those for a dollar a piece anywhere really. Funny store though. I sold a IHC that were worse than those for a $1.50 with shipping. The buyer asked me how fast I will give him feedback because he needed one more star to get to the next level. Funny, he seemed more interested in the feedback than the coin. I sold it for a dollar because that was all that it was worth.
