Yes it is genuine BUT it has been badly cleaned a couple of times by the looks of it.

with appleangel, has had a clean. Why there are still spots on the obverse is a mystery though? A couple of rim knocks.

BUT in saying that, I've never owned one so good luck demerest

Unusual die crack from REX through IMP: (Can't see that specific one listed in Renniks).

I didnt think it has been cleaned and it was just harsh lighting. Having had a second look there is obvious pitting on the reverse where some verdigris has must have been removed.

It does look like a genuine coin at least.

you can buy better 1923's at auction - and, I'd prefer buying from an auction house because you know it's genuine, I'd always be cautious buying from a picture when spending that kind of cash

It's definately genuine but for that price I'd rather have
one that hasn't got a patch that's been eaten by verdigris

I think you did the right thing. Most major auctions have a few for sale. If you can go and view them in person and then bid accordingly. From what I've seen the ones at auction generally go a bit cheaper than youd find elsewhere.

Thank you very much for answering my question.

My intention is to learn and your info will help on the journey to do that.

I have been reading the errors and grading forums about Australia pennies but have not been exposed to much about fakes or forgeries accept that a lot of bad coin are coming out of Asia.

My mind spins at how easy it is to make a mold and pour metal into it.
Aging a coin by someone with the know how and questions like on this thread worries me. But the answers are so good here and there is a confidence in the answers that has lead me to inquiring about this amazing knowledge in this thread.

Sometimes a newbie may ask an experienced person a question the wrong way but this is a long way from my intention.

Most of the fakes you will see of australian key dates will be altered dates or struck forgeries, especially with the copper dates.

Yep,but normally very easy to spot a cast coin although many tried with Oz Silver in the 1920/30's.

There are some very good/excellent fake 1923's out there, you are better off at an Auction House than ebay IMO.

My 2 bobs worth is that the OP coin has had Verdigris Pro.(or semi Pro.) removed and is probaly a genuine coin.

After reading the link above on the 1923 half penny I am very much looking forward to looking at and for the differences in the minting of Australia pennies and half pennies.

I do not think that as a collector that I will try and specialise in any other area because of time and financial restraints but what an amazing area to collect and it is so popular as well. Bulk coins in this area are still within the reach of most people.
