Started to think about collecting a series showing the progression of die cracks.

Came up with the idea when I got myself a 1840-O Half (not fake this time) and found 3 other with the same cracks, more and less progressed.

Anyone in here have a series like that to show off, I'd love to see it, doesn't matter the denomination.

Do you think a series like that would be hard to make it a large series? It would be one you never can complete though...

You know, it's my dream to collect the progression of the obverse "trident" die cracks on the 1798 heraldic eagle Draped Bust dollars from BB-113 to BB-119. Can I borrow about $17,000?

I figured that Seated Liberty Halfs would be ideal. with a mintage not too high, but high enough to not ruin me.
and would be nice to find nice cracks to collect.
Actually, the 1840-O would be pretty good...If I settle for a set of 10, it would cost me too much..

If you're just looking to trace the progression of a die crack(s), I might be able to help.

Here are a couple of 1840 O Half Dollars I have with a variety of cracks:

... and one that I can't detect any cracks on but you might be able to discern a crack starting? (Maybe on the right (as we look at it) wing tip going up?)

VERY cool progression of 2 die cracks! I like the very big one through the eagle's right (as we're looking at it) wing.(And man! What a die crack!) And you can see the smaller one through the H in HALF progressing too! Nice!

But, it looks like none of my 1840 O's are going to help you with this die disintegration. Sorry!

Found a really early stage...So it seems this die is quite common.

Start it as a digital collection and then try and locate physical specimens to match the die stages in you digital collection. The digital collection will let you know what you are looking for.

Thats actually a great idea. I love looking at die cracks, don't think I have any on any of my coins. I personally like the idea of a collection of the progression of die cracks, it would make for a neat presentation.

I got 9 so far of my 1840-O cracks. Some of them are really close. So I'll start browsing the web looking for more cracks before I start sorting them...

a fun project, indeed
