Has anyone ever seen a toned Morgan dollar this beautiful? I would really like to know how much it sold for.

NOTE: Sorry, guys. When I logged into my photobucket account, the image was gone. I'm not sure how that happened.

I hope that slab is airtight. It needs to be, to hold the tone. Toning this good can be VERY delicate.
Looks to be a small nick on the adam's apple, but it could also be dust particle on the outside.

How things have changed. In the mid to late 1980's there were a few dealers who had cases full of dollars colored like this at the Long Beach, CA shows and any reputable dealer of the time would not buy any of them or want to be seen dealing with the people that were selling them. They were all deemed to be artificially toned and were the talk of the shows, look at those colors, how did they get them to look like that were a couple of the comments heard around the bourse floor about them. Now they are getting big bucks for their unnatural rainbows.

Do the TPG companies validate toning? I'm a little worried now after I saw an ad on ebay where the guy admitted he toned the ASE he had for sale and said he could do any coin you wanted if you let him know.

Kind of a bummer that people can't leave things alone!

I have seen some auctions on ebay where the seller admitted to artificially toning Peace dollars with an electric current. Before I even read that in the description, I knew that something about the colors just didn't look right.

It isn't too hard to mildly heat treat ANY coin.
What is worthwhile is to know how to tell the difference between naturally toned, and artificially toned.

Heck, I've tried three different browsers on that pic and I'm still unable to see the coin. I've no idea what it looks like.

It's threads like these (and all others) that I like to capture and post the image while it is still available instead of a hyperlink.

It might take a little extra time, but it is so worth it, IMO.

I think the images should be viewable now. I also included close-up images of the coin. Sorry about that.

Wow that is gorgeous! Looks to be a end of the roll because the back has little toning? Or can that be caused by something else?

Here's another equally impressive toned Morgan, although not as beautiful, IMO.

Just a thought . . . I try to read most of the threads on toned coins and many of the experts seem to say that the color progression follows the colors of the rainbow. I use the name ROY G BIV to remember red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. I know this is a slabbed coin but the colors don't match up with what I've read. What goes?

Which coin are you talking about? If you look at the coin from the original post, I think you could find the color scheme in there. If you start from the bottom (at the date) and work your way up, you can just about find them there.

What do you think?
