This was in an unopened, new bank roll of 2002 Tennessee State Quarters. The rest of them were normal, but this one is black. The LED lighting I used gives the picture a slight blueish color that is not present on the actual coin (taken in a 2X2). I have heard of Black Beauty Nickels - is this a similar thing? What about a value? It is not mine, but belongs to a very good friend and I want to be able to offer the right price for it as I think it looks cool. Any help appreciated. oops - I guess the pics might help!, so I edited to include them

Quit possibly. If you had taken a picture of this coin next to a normal quarter it would be easier to tell for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was struck on an improperly annealed planchet. I think I've seen other tennessee quarters with this error before.

Yeah it would've been nice to see a side by side.

The biggest clue I see is luster, something that should be present on an improperly annealed coin but is typically destroyed by any other other post-mint process that darkens a coin.

Let me work on that...
Any idea of value?

OK - PIcs side by side. Remember this was found in an unopened bank roll of 2002 quarters. I don't like the lighting in the pic - but it still shows the coloration.

It is a good thing you showed the original pics first since the new ones do not show any luster. The most likely explanation is that you have an improperly annealed planchet, not a particularly valuable error with slabbed State Quarters typically selling in the $20-30 range on ebay.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes - I know the second pic was flat on luster. I still have yet to make a serious setup for taking coin pics.
I took the first by pointing an LED light directly on it to hopefully pick up the luster. The second was just ambient room lighting. The luster is evident in hand.
