I'd rather have a silver proof commemorative coin in the original mint packaging than slabbed and certified as a PR68 or PR69. You start talking PR70 and I might be swayed. The mint packaging, to me, is part of the overall appeal. I'd be interested in knowing what others prefer, and why.

Mint packaging Is not only part of the appeal, it's part of the Mint's product. Proof coins should always be sold by the mint in airtight capsules. With Royal Australian Mint proof products, the proof coins ARE packaged in airtight capsules. The capsules are then presented in plush lined display cases. In this sort of situation, it would be dumb to have such proof coins TPG'ed and sent back in slabs. The slabs would be incompatible with the mint packaging. You could never be certain that you would get a PR70 grading anyway. This makes me wonder why a proof coin should be slabbed at all. I theory, ALL proof coins should be perfect to begin with. If they are not, send them back to the Mint and have them replaced with perfect ones. Proof dies should only have a very limited number of coins struck off them. Proof coins should only be at the very pinnacle of quality, and of the minter's art. If they are less than that in any way, the Mint is foisting a defective product on you. Count me in on OGP.
Unless as you said, an MS/PF 70. That, I would consider.

I'll buy the slabbed coins all day if I can get them for the same price as OGP. There's lots of slabbed MS/PF69's because so few make the 70 grade. As for storage, the OGP's just takes up too much space.

I like my coins raw. Makes it easier to fit them into albums.  But if I had to choose between OGP and TPG, I would choose OGP. I do have a few OGP items (three Prestige proof sets and the Lincoln Coin and Chronicles set) and most definitely have an appreciation for the packaging. Any slabbed commemorative that may come my way will certainly be cracked for my 7070 (two holes to fill, one half dollar and one dollar). |

I prefer OGP and raw but have been known to purchase a slab her or there if the price was right.

Count me in the slabbed category. Some of the ogp is nice but for say the ASEs often times its just a box and makes it a pain to look at everything.
I would rather have Ogp than a 67 or 68 for moderns though unless they were the top pop somehow.

I prefer raw so I don't have to feel guilty about removing it from OGP. Then in the OGP as long as the selling is not doing a big mark up because it has OGP. Lastly slabbed. I only own one slabbed coin at the moment, I will probably buy some more in the future but I am just not a fan of the large size and the bulk.
Now, I must say, even though I don't like all the fancy OGP, I do enjoy the posts commems puts together with all the mint ephemera.

Since we are in the comemmoratives... I prefer them in the OGP. I like the packaging - even the little boxes.

I don't own any yet, but I like the way that the Prestige sets looked. Overall, I like raw coins placed into Danscos. I like to be able to look at lots of shiny coins at the same time. The boxes just make the coins too bulky.

I do have all the Prestige Sets and others in OGP and I also have many of them slabbed in MS69 and MS70 also both grades in proof as well. I like em both but I do prefer the slabbed commemoratives myself.

Good thread. I'm torn between original packaging for storage. For instance: Do we save the brown cardboard sleeve (with no writing on it) as well as the white plastic thing holding the actual box with the coin inside? Or is just the box/coin itself enough to keep?
Then we have the many different methods of packaging from one year to the next; which doesn't lend well to storage.
Since I'm late and have to buy these commemoratives on the secondary market sometimes all I get is the box holding the coin, but more often all that comes is the coin itself in the capsule. So I have a mismash of items.
As for the slabs: All I have are 69s and when I ckeck the population it is often in the THOUSANDS and often bought for less than the original issue price which makes me curious about the value, not even adding the cost of slabbing. But the slabs are nice and easy to store.

I have no modern commemoratives in slabs. The OGP's are cumbersome when viewing, if stored in the individual boxes, and then there are the multiple coin sets that have different sizes and shapes creating storage issues. It's good to have the complete set but I tend to view my photos instead of each piece for ease of viewing.

While I like OGP I also have an issue of viewing the coins that are stored therein. I don't own any slabbed commeratives and only own a few that are not in airtites (those are in my 7070 album). I do agree that OGP take up quite a bit of space. Somehow keeping these coins in OGP seems right and so until I can figure out an answer I'll keep them in OGP.
Sometimes I do wish that all commeratives come in boxes similiar to the OGP's that are used for the halves. There are much easier to store and take less space and less time in viewing.

If there was only a Dansco that would house the collection in the airtites. Then viewing the set would be awesome!
