I was moving my Jefferson's to a new holder and noticed a horseshoe shape in the obverse. It's kind is hard to see in the pictures. I plan on taking it to a coin show at the end of the month and see if I have something unusual.

Yep, you are right...it's hard to see it.

Although I do see something (depression) on the reverse where "five" is. Post Mint Damage more than likely.

I believe this is a "heavy design transfer" or "progressive indirect design transfer".

Here is my LWC version.

Follow this link for an explanation:

http://www.error-ref.com/progressiv...ansfer-.html

The one pictured on Mr. Diamond's Site is the same date as mine but mine is more pronounced. It was this forum that educated me on this error. Now it's your turn to learn from this forum.

I'm not sure this is what is going on with your coin.

It's Die Deterioration. 1954, and especially 1954-S nickels are known for this pattern of deformation. It's not exactly a case of progressive, indirect design transfer, as the "mushroom" doesn't faithfully match the outline of Jefferson's bust. However, I do believe the bust does guide its formation in some fashion. You can find 1954-S nickels with much stronger "mushrooms".

Ken Potter has speculated that the nickel blanks were unusually hard this year, leading to unusually severe and rapid Die Deterioration. Seems like a reasonable explanation. It could also be that the dies were unusually soft, due to faulty preparation.

Hey Mr. Diamond,

Thanks for your clarification. This is why I edited my post to add that I wasn't so sure about his nickel being a progressive design tranfer. I had noticed the ghost image did not line up but wasn't 100 percent sure. Thank you again for your post.
