As stated in a previous post, I am thinking of converting some EE Bonds into coins. I came across this website and they have 3 coins listed as an investment. A $5.00 Liberty Gold (Raw) in AU for $225.00, a 1938 D Buffalo nickel in MS66 (PCGS/NGC) for a $100.00, and a $10.00 Liberty Gold (Raw) in AU for $405.00

I am not to familiar with the Gold or Buffalo series. Can someone enlighten me as to why these coins are considered a good investment?

Thanks,
Tim

Not entirely sure why but here is the return rate for the 1938D nickel from U.S. coin values site.

Tim, I have no clue as to the quality or reputation of that vendor, so I can't comment on that. However, there's no way I could endorse a sight-unseen purchase of any gold valued much over bullion. Using that $5 as the example, today's bullion price for that coin is $161.89, and any additional value must be a function of the date and condition of the coin.

They're picking the date, and you're taking their word for the condition. To me, that math doesn't work, even if I knew I could trust them.

If I were going to buy a $5 Liberty Gold, it'd be this one, or one llike it:

Mintage of only 302,000, relatively clean rims, and only the mark near the arrowheads to take away from the eye appeal. What's more, it's $10 less than the one you're considering. For the record, that price is $20-30 more than the going rate at Heritage for similar coins.

And, $405 will buy you a Mint State $10 Liberty Eagle, with pictures.

I have to agree with Super Dave. I've never been less than pleased with anything I've bought from HJB.
