I have a 5 cent canadian coin from 1942 that looks to be copper.
What is this variety?

I believe it's a Tombac.

During World War II, tombac Canadian 5 cent coins were produced so that more nickel could be availed to the war effort. Tombac is an alloy of 88% copper and 12% zinc.

Tombac was used in place of nickel from partway through 1942 and all of 1943. (there is a single 1944 tombac error made) Once they circulated they darkened to the colour yours has. When new they were a shiny golden colour like this one.

On those ones, the dots and dashes around the edge spell out: "We Win When We Work Willingly" in Morse code.
