I believe this is the second theft/loss at the store in 3-4 months.
LAKE TWP. â€" Uniontown police are looking for the man who made off with nearly $50,000 in gold and silver coins and jewelry outside the Hartville Coin & Jewelry store.
An employee was delivering the merchandise to the local post office for shipment when the bag fell out of his trunk outside the store at 1015 Edison St. NW around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, according to Police Chief Harold Britt and a news release from the store.
The stolen tan bag contained 10 1-ounce Krugerrand gold coins, a half-ounce Krugerrand, three sovereign British gold coins, 75 Canadian silver dollars and more than 2 pounds miscellaneous gold, the store's release said.
Britt said the long-time employee left the store with the merchandise and placed it into his vehicle truck, but he didn't see the trunk pop open as he pulled away. The bag fell out.
Store video shows a silver Buick SUV pull up from the south or opposite entrance to the parking lot and park. A man steps out of the passenger side and walks to the store.
Britt said he is greeted by the store security officer who tells him the store is not open.
The man sees the bag but returns to the SUV, which has since parked in another parking spot. He is seen getting into the passenger side of the SUV, which pulls up to the bag and then stops.
Britt said the man picked up the bag, which is gone when the SUV starts moving again, this time, out of the north end of the parking lot.
The man â€" who is black and has a mustache â€" was wearing a striped toboggan or beanie-style hat.
Police are looking for the man and the driver, whose description was not available.
A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the man who took the bag.
Britt asked anyone with information about the man, the driver or the SUV to call police at 330-699-6444.

Wait, but wasn't this bag "lost"? If it was lost and no one picked it up from the store, I would presume that there shouldn't be any consequences.
As far as I know, it is perfectly legal to pick up lost money from the street, immoral, but not illegal.

They always seem to place their merchandise in the trunk. How about in the cab right next to you.

This sounds just a little odd if you ask me.

Something doesn't add up with this one. The amount of items in the bag size wise seems very small. How does it fall out of an automobile trunk and how does a drive not see the trunk lid come up in his rear view mirror. And as vermontensium said, why didn't the drive place it on the seat next to him as it seems like the size would have been small enough to do it. I'm sure the cops are going to be looking at the drive that lost the bag very carefully.

If I had more than 2 pounds of gold it would be handcuffed to my arm not in the trunk of my car!

Yeah, it didn't make much sense to me either when I read it. I thought it was probably due to being poorly written. In any event, it was a big loss.

"... made off with nearly $50,000 in gold and silver coins and jewelry... 10 1-ounce Krugerrand gold coins, a half-ounce Krugerrand, three sovereign British gold coins, 75 Canadian silver dollars and more than 2 pounds miscellaneous gold,..." Wouldn't that add up to more that $50,000? And why didn't the security guard notice the bag?

I believe from my understanding of that read, the bag was in a parking lot under video surveillance so private property. Still pretty immoral thing to do if it's a private lot. Sounds like they didn't know what was in it just scooped it up and drove off.

That seems very careless.

Yes unless the employee was in a hatchback, I don't see how a large bag could simply fall out, unless his trunk was stuffed with junk. Even if my trunk popped open I would notice it pretty quick, and nothing would fall out as it's a couple feet deep from the edge down. A bag with a lot of gold and silver, would be heavy, it can't blow out, so I'm thinking a hatchback and the momentum caused it to roll out, and the door close back (unless he had a dashlight indicator for the hatch, he may not have seen it. I wish the survellance video was made available to the public. Would explain a lot I'm sure, or just better in-depth reporting and writting skills by the newspaper. EDIT-Did some searching and found the tape, here. http://fox8.com/2013/03/08/gold-sil...parking-lot/Looks like the employee was just carless.

I always give people the benefit of the doubt and wouldn't want to suggest that the only reason he turned in the bag was that his face was plastered all over Hartville.
Good for him for doing the honest thing by turning in the bag to the police.

After watching that video, does anybody else think "theft" is an awfully strong word for what happened there? Instead of a $1000 bounty if the criminal is prosecuted and convicted, why not a $1000 reward for return of the lost property?
