I've had this $2 bill for quite a while. Not even sure where or how I got it. It is a 1976 bill with a 13¢ stamp and postmarked April 13, 1976 from Phoenix. There is no address so apparently did not go through the mail. Anyone have any significance of this? Why was it stamped and postmarked?

April 13, 1976 was the First day of Issue for the then-new 1976 series $2 bills and it was apparently quite popular to get the new $2s postmarked as there are many examples around. They do usually have a small premium, especially if the postmark is from an interesting location.

OK Thank you! Living in Phoenix I must have gotten it from a LCS or maybe coin club. Phoenix is probably NOT an "interesting location." LOL.

Yikes! See what you mean about "quite popular." Just went to ebay. Pages of them for sale. Then went to completed items. Double Yikes. A few did go for fair amounts (due to postmarks and/or stamps?) Some actually for less than $2 (but hefty postage) and MANY did not sell.

To the best of memory, this phenomena started in 1964. A few, new Kennedy half dollars were attached to a "letter"
and postmarked on the first day of issue for the half. While not at all pretty looking, they were quite expensive way back when.
Since then, other "wannabees" have copied the idea.
"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

An interesting marriage of coins/currency and stamps.

I have 5 of those from my home zip code, and 4 others (have 2, 2 on order) from other zips.

I see these sell for around $5. Odd towns can be worth $10 or a little more.

I wouldn't say that Harold. Been trying to get out that way for some time now.....Lake Havasu or Bullhead City. No more cold winters.

If I saw one for sale, I may grab it, but I love anything to do with the $2.
