Help. I found this in a roll and I think this is a small date, compared to other ones I have looked at. Any thoughts. Thanks.

Looks like a large date to me see how the inner stem of the 9 is pointing towards the bottom of the 7 on a small date it will be curved up a bit pointing towards the middle of the 7 check out Lincoln Cent resource they have some good pics and what to look for on a small date. And the 1 in the date is up to high I could be wrong just my opinion

Ok here we go again. I don't think my first photos were great. What do you think now? The large and small date examples below are from the Lincoln Cent resource website. Look at the height of the "s" and the shape of the "0" on the coins. Also I guess there is a crease where the horizontal line of the seven matches up with the vertical part of the seven in the large date as well. I think it's a small date.

I agree it's a large date... I find that looking a the curl of the 9 is easier to look for then the evenness.

The growing problem with pulling these coins from circulation, is by now they are so banged up the details get obscured. Despite all the hits, the overall geometry of the date is pretty different between LD and SD. Check out these pics by Coop: Then on your coin, check out how the stroke of the "7" hangs below the "0". The "S" isn't diagnostic...it was hand-punched after the die was made.

Its a large date the curl on the 9 isn't right and the 7 is too long and not bold enough. There hard to tell I've gone through lots of them and swore it was a small date and it wasn't there are a lot of folks on here that have lots of knowledge and some are the best in the world.

Fayette, just supplying some data to help in your decision. But, if you want my opinion, I think I see the stroke of the "7" go below the "O" (arrow) As I said, the digits are banged up, which makes it hard to see the diagnostic crease of the "7". The "0" is also worth comparing. On the small date, the inside is more pointed on the top.

I really appreciate all the help. I will keep searching. Is there a population total out there for the small date?

There are several different dies with the small date. But they are to find in circulation.

From what I've read, the small dates were struck on dies used to produce mint sets. Roughly 10% of the Lincoln cents in mint sets are small dates--that's the only place I've found them myself. Way back in the 80-90s, I would look for them in rolls when I lived in Cali. Despite as many as 5 70-S per roll, I never found a SD. They're really tough to find in circulation, but a few have turned up on this forum. I've had better luck searching Lincolns sold out of mint sets. Good luck!

... Large Date. Best wishes on the continued search for this relatively elusive modern variety. David

The OPs coin in this thread is - without question - a small date.
I will buy it for $10.
