Last night I spent an hour looking at 1964 pennies in a very comfortable chair and moving the penny around in the light so as to see the penny clearly. Very enjoyable indeed! The bottom 2 coins mid & right. The mid coin looks to be an error in the 1 of 1964. The right coin 1 of 1964 seemed to be quite common in that state. What do you think about the bottom right coin? The red colour looks like something has been added to make the red colour? These stamps are the same as above and in the same order. What do you think of this? Thank you in advance. kg5 Edited by kg5 03/12/2013 6:44 pm

The 1 is certainly weakly struck in the bottom right example, as it seems to be in most of the exanples you have posted. It is quite common on the later QEII issues and in 1964 on Perth minted coins in particular. You may alreqdy know this but you can tell if the coin has een minted in Perth or Melbourne by the ptesence of a dot at the end of PENNY. Perth pennys have it Melbourne pennies do not. As you look at more you will be able to just look at one and be able to tell if it is perth or melb wihout having to go for the dot. Perth is usually weakly struck and Melb pennies are usually fa better struck. Perth lustre can be quute yellow/gold and can have quite a few beautiful colours. Melbourne luatre is muc more red/orange and doesn't tone so beautifully although it can.

I remember, when I was a boy, and these came into circulation. We knew they'd be the last, as Decimal Conversion was well-advanced down the pipeline. They were bizarrely-coloured, and often streaked, when they were new. I've wondered if the bronze for that year was made of a different composition, or perhaps contaminated.

Thank you to every one for the comments and encouragement. It means a great deal to me!
It has turned out to be a great find for a newbie!
Have only stopped for 30mins today and I have another 2hrs at leased to go.
Nice to have the 1964 pennies to look at. I will never forget those 6 coins.
Looking forward to being a coin collector again soon. It is something that can not be rushed. It would not be right, its to noble for that.

Is it just my eyes, or does the reverse of the top right coin also show an impression of the Queen's head?

I can see what you mean awildeheart, sure looks like it. I'm intrigued with the red crescent at the left of that coin and the one at the base of the top left coin. When I was a kid I remember dipping boxes of spuds in a tank of 'solution' to stop disease / insects prior to planting. (It was probably dieldrin based). This solution was a deep red, about the colour of the top right obverse. From memory it could turn pennies to this colour, makes you wonder. (Brings back memories at the least).

There does seem to be some ghosting going on with that top right coin.

Quote: I'm intrigued with the red crescent at the left of that coin and the one at the base of the top left coin. Crescents like that occur when there has been another coin sitting partially on top of the coin for a looooong time. It is usually more pronounced with copper and bronze coins.
