Scanner:Canon Pixma MP780 all in one
Camera:Nikon Coolpix 950
Both are old and well used.

First off I am not a photographer, not even close,I have seen better pictures posted by forum members using
their cell phones.I have a little better than basic knowledge of my hardware and software and not much
desire to progress beyond that.Just enough knowledge to get by and be dangerous to myself.
I applaud those who strive to be better.
I also do not know if all scanners are created equal.Mine has a good many failings when it comes to coins.
I also can never remember using the scanner for scanning coins.I scan my Stamps,Las Vegas Strip Casino
Chips and the little currency I collect. So it was a learning process over several weeks.
All photos and scans are unedited, though some could clearly benefit from it.
Also from a tip I picked up in another post, depending on the details you are trying to show, rotating the coin
on the scanning bed can be important.

First up low grade Mercury 10C.Scan will always be on left unless otherwise stated.Since It is low grade and
the main focus is the cracked planchet, either picture is sufficient.
It would just depend on what pleases you.
Found in a dealers silver junk box.

Next up is a two picture set of a higher end circulated Standing Liberty quarter,Type I.First is a scan done
in the color setting. As I began scanning larger coins,I began to get some
rain bowing, notice the shoulders.I tried gray scale, eliminated the rain bowing, but resulted in a poorer scan.

Next is a 1978 Kennedy half with clashed dies, done in gray scale and rotated to pick up detail. This one didn't scan well.
Found in circulation

The next three are closeups of 1939 D/D 25c and I was surprised.
The scan is surprisingly clear.
The scan is done in gray scale and in preview mode the scan area was cut down as small as possible.
The 2nd shot is macro and the third is taken with an improvised lens setup. All three could be edited to display better.

Next set is a 64D Kennedy doubled die using just the word TRUST.
No matter what I tried, this would not scan well.So what you see is what there is.Does not mean a different scanner would not do better.
The photo isn't all that great either.Actually two photos.Improvised lens I use for closeups has narrow field of view and had to take
two shots and stitch them together.
Found in circulation(bag of Kennedy's)

As a note my scanner does not do well with the modern clad coinage, but does well with smaller silver coin and OK
with larger silver.Older brown copper is hit and miss.
First two are scans.
1948 5 peso only darkside coin I ever bought.

Scan and photo
The pence and farthing are both circulation finds.Never know what you will find in circulation.

The scan came the closet to the darkness of the coin.
Neither picked up the bright spot on the tail from a hit the coin took once upon a time.

This last one also found in circulation with maybe a little editing.

Excellent presentation. We appriciate your effort. I find a good scanner can't better my camera, but on circulated silver coins it's plenty good enough for ebay and a fast way for me to grab a lot of coins for listings fast.

My scanner is an old model Firewire Epson Expression 1600 Artist with transparancy top. It also allows for adjusting the focus to the coin, from a normal paper, that feature really helps. It wasn't cheap back when new, around $2500.00 but with the slide top and various film holders, full copy of Photoshop it was worth it for my work. Still works like the day I got it! 11x14" scan plate top and bottom @1600dpi x 3200dpi. Today you can find them really cheap!
