I have been thinking of throwing one of my Buffalo nickels back into circulations for someone else to find I have about 10 of them and they are all dateless so I would throw the worst one back. What do you guys think should I do it? or keep them all?

I say keep it so it doesn't take the chance of never finding a good home. There's no guarantee that a collector will find it. That thing could end up in a sewer.

The collector in me says keep it, but the collector in me also says if I didn't find stuff like that in circulation, I wouldn't have half the collection I do now. Either way you go, I approve. I know, that was no help at all.

Keep all coins worth over face. If you want to be generous, you could always do a giveaway game on the appropriate boards here. Putting coins back in circulation seems pointless.

Even though they are dateless make sure none of them are a key date or semi-key date.If none are then go ahead and either give them to a YN you know or a soon-to-be YN. John1

I would keep it if I were you, but whatever you want to do.

Twenty years ago I would probably say spend it, but today I am concerned that Zack is right in that they may never find a new home. I say take John's advice and give them to kids, maybe you will generate some interest. Worst case, they spend them anyway. At least you tried.

I say by all means, put them in to circulation, and make someone's day. Here is a reply I posted in the " Hopefully passing on a hobby " topic thread. It was great ! Quote:It's school vacation week, so the kids and I decide to do our semi monthly sorting of the pocket change jar. As we started to sort quarters, pennies, dimes from nickels , my young son said " ooh Dad a D-mint Bison nickel ", always a great find here on the east coast. He continued to search through the change and exclaimed " oh Dad, here's another one " all of a sudden he stopped , his mouth fell open, and there in his hand was a Buffalo nickel. He was soooooo excited. It was a dateless cull, but still an awesome find for an 11 year old. He proudly inserted it into his " type coin " book, and can't wait for his next " show and tell " turn at school. Awesome day !

I throw Indian Head cents in with my pennies that I dump after going through them. Lol they aren't in the best of shape but might make someone's day.

But all of you people saying it would make somebody's day, I see what you're saying, but imagine this. You roll an Indian Head cent in a roll intending to make someone's day. A person that isn't a coin collector gets it back in change. They put it in their pocket just like any other penny. They see one of their friends walking across a parking lot, so they reach into their pocket and grab a penny. It happens to be the Indian Head cent. They throw it at the person and they have a good laugh. Meanwhile the penny is left in the parking lot. After countless times of being run over, someone picks it up. Then it looks like some of the pennies you find in a coinstar reject tray. This story may seem unlikely, but there are all kinds of other situations like this. If you are going to get rid of it, give it to a young coin collector and make sure it is kept. Make sure it won't get into circulation and ruined. You could get a roll from the bank, and insert the indian in the middle of it. Then give it to a young collector and make their day.

I would tip the bank teller with it the next time you pick up some boxes or dump some coins.
It never hurts to pass a bribe along every once in a while.
