I recently purchased the highlight of my collection . It is a higher grade (gVF- aEF) 1920 dot over English penny(certainly the best example extant of this R7 rarity). It does however have the usual gunk in the letters and denticles (and possibly a light coat of oil) that detracts from the coin. I want to get the coin properly cleaned/conserved so I can take high res images (for research) and then get it slabbed. I don't want to risk it being damaged or bodybagged by improper cleaning. Can anyone with experience recommend a suitable proffesional conserver on the East Coast of Australia that preferably is used by the big 3 proffessional grading services for pre slabbing conserving. BTW which of the 3 slabbers is best for Australian pre-decimals?

Sounds from your description that this coin may have been cleaned in olive oil. Simply dunk it in acetone to get rid of the oily residue and do NOTHING else to it. If after the acetone bath you are not happy then see if you can get a refund for the coin I have to add that I am TOTALLY the wrong person to ask about slobbing

Trout, not a chance in heck that I would return this gem. Got it from England (UK ebay) and paid 3,000 pounds ($4,700). In VG they go for over $3,000, in F for over $5,000; so I got a bargain (I was prepared to go to over 11,000 pounds). I won't try doing anything to the coin (in case I stuff things up) and that is why I want the best proffessional conserver possible. Robster, I have not yet photographed the coin but it is still possible to see on UK ebay (NOT Aussie eBay- probably why I didn't get much competition). It is item 380577131282 (or just go to Coins; 1920 penny and look at completed items highest price first and it comes up).

That is a really strong dot and a nice overall grade. Id be leaning towards aEF rather than gVF. Probably get AU-50-53 I reckon. NGC have a conservation service.

Id use acetone before distilled water all day. If there is a sheen of oil then distilled water isn't going to do a thing, acetone will.

For a coin of that value I would be sending it to a professional....I've heard good reports about both PCGS and NCS, but I would be asking them some questions well before sending them that coin.

Thanks for the replies. I looked at the recommended slabbers and there are a few problems. They conserve and slab the coin ( they say 4-6 week turnaround but that is probably for the USA, but I'm fine with waiting), but how do I get very high resolution detailed photos from multiple angles, special lighting tricks etc done once the coin is slabbed? Some of the details I need are down to microns in size. But if I crack the slab to take the images I void the grade backing. Does anyone have experience of using these services and were there any problems?
