I am considering purchasing a 1880S PCGS MS64 morgan that has very attractive bluish color with orange in center on reverse side. Obverse does not have much toning. Little of brownish around rim. Price guide price is about $90 for this coin. Seller is asking $235 delivered. Is this a crazy price or not? Jerry

the price the seller is asking is only crazy if you pay for it. Pics would help, but 1880s is a very common and well struck morgan for the series.

It is a pretty coin and I'll say it's only worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

I love and prefer toned coins, and primarily collect Morgan's. Would I pay a premium for a nicly toned example? Absolutly! But, would I pay that much of a premium for that coin? No.. To me it's just not really that nice as far as toners go (but that's my personal opinion, it very may well stand out as beautiful to someone else). But even if it were toning I absolutly loved that is way too much of a premium in my opinion. Even if that coin really really appeals to you that is quite a bit to pay.. But it's obviously up to you. As mentioned, 1880-s is a common date, known for gem examples and great strikes. And finding a beautiful toned MS-64 in a slab is pretty easy. Here's a 1887 PCGS with CAC MS-64 (I believe its a 64+/65 though so thats the other reason I payed a premium) I recently got with what I consider beautiful toning, (I like both crescents, bullseye's and complete toners, & this one really appeals to me) and I did pay a premium for this one but under $130, and mine may not appeal to you so you might say you wouldn't pay a premium.. If you do a bit of searching you can probably find a slabbed 1880-s that absolutely appeals to you for quite a bit less than the asking price for the one you asked about.

Actually... The more I look at it the more I like it! It definitely is a nice toner! But no matter how much I like it thats still too much of a premium in my opinion.. thats just alot! The obverse looks more 63 to me too though... Always remember buy the coin and not the slab... If it was a gem example/high for the grade then that on top of toning can bring more of a premium, or help to justify paying more but IMHO that's too much to pay for this one.

that is a lot of money for a MS-64 1880-S even if it was Monster toned (which this one is not) You can get a MS-6 in around the same price range of this date/mm combination. That toning isn't worth that kind of premium and in my opinion anyone who would pay it would be over paying by a pretty large sum. I think even the 90.00 for a MS-64 1880-S is a little high, you must be looking at the PCGS price guide or something because the last ones I looked at in that grade were around 50 bucks

thanks very much for the helpful advice. I too thought the price was too high even thought I really liked the color of that coin.

I can only agree with the fact that the toning "CRY'S" out to the buyer...In the past few years many have tried to put a PREMIUM on the toned coins...also many have been altered for this pourpus... false toning do to microwaving or other means.for this grading companies look carefully for the means..natural/altered surfaces...My point is.. IF one loves the toned coins, and is willing to spend the extra cash for them... FOR YOUR "OWN EYE APPEAL"...then SLABBED examples are a must.
