Just received my first batch of world coins. Is it wrong to clean it?. I'm not trying to make it shiny or anything, just clean it so theres no unnecessary "dirt". If its ok, then whats the best way?.
Rest in Peace

Hi -- are the coins encrusted in mud or something? or do they just have the normal amount of black dirt in the crevices?

I know that people soak coins that are encrusted in mud.

Post some photos. I'm sure you'll get some advice and a whole bunch of opinions.

If they are in average circulated condition, cleaning them with soap and water is OK if they are obviously dirty.
The next step is acetone, to remove oragnic substances such as grease and oil, that the soap didn't.

Coins in top condition never need cleaning except for the removal of fresh fingerprints, in which case, use acetone.
After that, leave all coins well alone.
For preservation, coins of any real value should be put in saflips or mylar / cardboard 2x2's.

Freshly unearthed ancient coins almost always need cleaning, but that is best left to an expert.
