Hello all,

Just a question I've always had and often ponder about. Many people (like myself) do not care for slabbed coins and others "crack" them open and resubmit them or cross-over to other TPG's in hopes of a better grade. How does this affect the population reports? Is it minimal? or major?

I only ask out of curiosity.

For example: Let's use the 1914-D Wheat cent, (I know a whale of a coin in wheats at least.)

Currently PCGS has graded 132 in MS64 and 59 in MS65 an $8500 difference (per their price guide). I find this curious. If it were me and I decided to send my 1914-D and got it back slabbed MS-64 it would be worth another couple of go's for the chance of 1 more grade and an $8500 difference. Crack it open and give it another shot which I'm sure happens, thus directly affecting the population report, (same coin shows twice or more times in different or same grades.) Just curious on thoughts about this.

I also find it odd that they have 1 graded MS62, an odd grade obviously.

Another reason to "buy the coin, not the slab".

PS - Also curious to read some literature, if there is any on this topic if someone would point me in the right direction.

I'm sure it affects population numbers but I'm not sure to what extent. What's funny is getting on coin facts and seeing the same coin pictured for say 64 and then 66.

Its hard to say for sure, but I would guess that it plays the biggest role in situations like what you mentioned. Id bet you could remove 10 to 20 percent of the population for the grade below a huge jump from resubmitts

My friend an ex-PCGS grader and started ICG, said he knew of a few coins back in the 1990's that had higher popultions than coins actually minted, (in gold). It can affect the counts a lot on some.

PCGS used to pay for returned certs, not any more, but I know a couple of guys that had literaly thousands and thousands of slab certs from crack outs. They were holding them on the chance PCGS might start paying for them again.
