Maris had this to say: "In 1861, Mark Newbie brought from Ireland a quantity of hal-pence and farthings, which were known amongs the colonists as "Patrick's half Pence."....They seem to have been quite useful in West Jersey for several years, and to have continued to pass current for more than a century."
Actually 1681 (approximately). These coins actually played a vital role as West New Jersey had no circulating currency, replacing trade goods and wampum.
