Hi All, I bought my first Mercury dime off ebay this week and received it today. It looks realy shiny. I know they cleaned it but does that lower the value of the dime ? and how can I tell if its really 90% silver?

Congrats on a beautiful coin. If its a real Mercury dime it will be made of 90% silver 10% copper and will weigh 2.50 grams. If it is a dime made on or after 1965 it will be made of a outer layer of copper-nickel sandwiched over a copper core and will weigh 2.27 grams. You can drop a silver coin onto say a table top and will make a very different sound than its modern counterpart.

Quote: I know they cleaned it but does that lower the value of the dime ? If it was in fact cleaned it would make it basically worth its silver value. From the auction though the pictures didnt look like a coin where your first guess would be its cleaned.

It could just be the pictures, looks like good strike and no reason to clean such a common coin for this year.

Unless you know something that we don't; I don't believe that it has been cleaned. Nice looking coin to add to your collection. I checked the web site also.
