Hi All,

I bought my first Mercury dime off ebay this week and received it today. It looks realy shiny. I know they cleaned it but does that lower the value of the dime ? and how can I tell if its really 90% silver?

Congrats on a beautiful coin. If its a real Mercury dime it will be made of 90% silver 10% copper and will weigh 2.50 grams. If it is a dime made on or after 1965 it will be made of a outer layer of copper-nickel sandwiched over a copper core and will weigh 2.27 grams. You can drop a silver coin onto say a table top and will make a very different sound than its modern counterpart.

If it was in fact cleaned it would make it basically worth its silver value. From the auction though the pictures didnt look like a coin where your first guess would be its cleaned.

It could just be the pictures, looks like good strike and no reason to clean such a common coin for this year.

Unless you know something that we don't; I don't believe that it has been cleaned. Nice looking coin to add to your collection. I checked the web site also.
