I believe ebay's VeRO is mostly for preventing counterfeit products to be sold on ebay. And what would be the point for Mint to shut down certain seller?

You are right, it is used mostly for counterfeits, but they will handle any intellectual property problems.

Yah I don't think VeRO applies here. The people pre-selling are not being fraudulent or selling counterfeit items. You have to understand the cost to obtain seller information and enforce policy. For the few coins being presold, its not worth the trouble. It would cost the mint more to police these types of sales then any benefit they would receive.

OK. Then what kind of intellectual property problem do you see here? Sellers use Mint's images to sell... Mint's products, not their own. I think it's very legitimate.

I think the mint has much larger IP problems than people using their images. For one some person in the US blatantly copied the 1812 1/4 oz gold coin and issued gold bullion version of this coin. This is a IP violation and a problem because they just devalued all the 1812 proof gold coins. All 1812 coins 1/4oz gold coins are now only worth bullion price. Why would someone pay issue price when they can have the same coin for 2/3 the price. Also resellers are calling the bullion knock off a Mint issue coin. That's a IP violation but nothing is done to those sellers.
So why are we people all hot an bothered about this subject? I can tell you why, they fear loosing sales to flippers or they fear not being able to get their own stash to flip. It's not about collecting, this is all about greed.

@scubu
What does it cost to keep a legal firm on retainer? $10,000 or a month. What does it cost per hour for legal service $200/hour and up. What does it cost to send an letter form a lawyer $200. So what does it cost to enforce someone from preselling? Thousands of dollars and for what? To stop a guy from selling a couple coins. Idiotic waste of resources.

You're not listening. Getting items removed through VeRO does not require an attorney. It costs them NOTHING but a very small amount of time.

VeRO can apply on pre sale items I am a huge collector of Louis Vuitton Try to pre sell any Louis Vuitton items on ebay they will be taken down as fast as they are put up. Louis Vuitton kayne x LV shoes were coming down as fast as they were put up for pre sale The men's damier line same situation Louis Vuitton Monogramouflage Takashi Murakami Line once again same situation And I won't even discuss the millionaire sunglasses I know a lot of other large luxury clothing companies do the same within there lines. Plus the most wanted LV items don't generally make it to the public. I have to spend well over $30k a year to keep me on top of LV's bloor st store list. In a way kind of like RCMs master club

I've been to the Angus Coin Shop a few times, its a private business run from the front room of the guys house located about 30 minutes west of Barrie Ontario(just outside of CFB Borden). He's no different than any other flipper out there with a profitable markup on all the desirable items. Looks to me to be a poorly spell checked scare tactic.

You think these companies have interns sitting around surfing the new just shooting down auctions using VeRO. I'm pretty sure some gets paid a lot of money to do this. Also you are comparing Super Exotic brands with mega profits on high end exclusive items to coins. Lets get real, just not worth the effort.

Shoes and clothes is totally different situation because their product could and WILL be counterfeited. Obviously they don't care about pre-sales themselves, they care about images and descriptions leaked out prematurely.

Quote: You think these companies have interns sitting around surfing the new just shooting down auctions using VeRO. Nope. They have someone that they pay for something else already that takes 15 minutes once a day to run a search and report them. You seem to think this a 24 hour a day job. It's 15 minutes a day. Hardly a massive undertaking to protect your authorized dealers from being undermined.

Personally I know your claim is false because I spend hours everyday looking for coins to buy. I even use predefined searches and have variable search characteristics just to make sure I don't miss and item. It takes even longer if you manually browse individual categories. Just imagine the time required to police all the coins released by the mint. This would require someone to not just to search ebay everyday but to also follow forums to get leads on leaked items. If you're going to police presales might as well police all copy right infringements and any other policy violations. This is now going to require more than one person working full time on this all day. Just not worth the effort, who are these presellers really hurting?
